Endurance News:

All IRONMAN races in US and Canada Sell Out for 2021!

After a challenging 2020 race season, athletes are demonstrating that they can't wait to get back to in-person racing: this week, general registration for all 12 full-distance IRONMAN triathlons across the United States of America and Canada for 2021 have now sold out. The 2021 full-distance IRONMAN season in the U.S. and Canada kicks off with the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas triathlon taking place on Saturday, April 24, 2021.

Throughout the pandemic, athletes have continued to train for their goal of competing in an IRONMAN triathlon. As 2021 events went on sale, the limited inventory available has sold out quickly. The ever-popular Visit Panama City Beach IRONMAN Florida sold out in two days, while IRONMAN California in Sacramento, new to the circuit, sold out in one day. IRONMAN Arizona reached capacity before it reached general registration, selling out during presale. More than 13,000 athletes will be racing in their first-ever full-distance IRONMAN event in 2021.

What's New in the 303:

Sharon Madison Wins Colorado Classic’s Virtual Yellow Jersey

Denver’s Sharon Madison has won Colorado Classic’s Virtual Yellow Jersey presented by the Gates Corporation for her on- and off-the-bike contributions to the greater cycling community.

Nominated by her peers no less than 14 times, Madison was once a professional cyclist, and has since dedicated her life’s work to building a community around the idea that a bike creates freedom and empowerment. She started the bike club at Wish 4 Wheels, providing bikes to second graders at Title 1 schools in Denver, and in the midst of the pandemic she created a new non-profit organization – We Ride 4 — which raises funds to support organizations that promote fitness, health and outdoor adventure for children.

Thousands of community votes came in during a weeklong voting period, which was a contest between three lead nominees: local judge Randi Polidori, team director Kathryn Curi and Madison. In the end, Madison will be crowned this year’s yellow jersey winner for which she will receive a signed 2019 Colorado Classic Leaders jersey as well as a Priority Bicycles Brilliant L Train Bicycle, equipped with a Gates Carbon Drive belt system.

The Gates Corporation has generously decided to ensure a happy end to the year for the runners up as well. Polidori and Curi will be also gifted a Gates Carbon Drive belt system equipped bike to see them off on new bike adventures in 2021. (See a congratulatory video here).

One of the reasons I love UCAN is because of how it works. UCAN is made from SuperStarch which is a complex carbohydrate that doesn’t spike blood sugar, delivering a slow and steady release of glucose into the bloodstream. Stable blood sugar provides steady energy to both the muscles and the brain, and controls cravings caused by blood sugar lows.

Reason 2 is that "taste over time" is a thing that's important to me.  There are those sports drinks that flavor just wears on you over time.  Most everything I've tried in the paste, I eventually grew tired of the taste.  I don't like sweets and sugary drinks generally seem to wear out my taste buds.  The sugary drinks also get nasty in the heat.

Reason 3 is that it's easy on my stomach.  It's like comfort food for my training and racing.  Simple sugar-based formulas consist of many individual sugar molecules in solution they exert a high osmolality in the gastrointestinal tract. The osmotic force in the stomach negatively impacts gastric emptying and increases gastric distress. - A Technological Breakthrough in Sports Nutrition Innovation

Interview with Thorsten Radde

Over the past couple of weeks we have been referring to the PTO "pro rankings" and we have the guy who literally come up ranking system. We've got Thorsten Radde of Tri Rating with us today.  The Tri Rating site has the PTO results analyzed -  PTO Championships 2020 at Challenge Daytona – Analyzing Results and we wanted the expert to help us understand the results and who had the outlier performances of the day.

What started out has a curiosity and hobby of collecting and analyzing pro triathlete results has turned into a near ten year journey of publishing rankings and his annual Kona Report.  We had a ton of questions about how his formula works, how hard it may be to collect all that data, when he's going to start his own online betting app.

Endurance News:

Dear Dave - Original IRONMAN Dave Orlowski

When we first met, little did I know that I was talking to a legend. It was December of 2017 and we were at the IRONMAN World Championship NBC Broadcast Preview Party in New York City. I remember your big smile and infectious energy as you made your way around the room talking to various guests. When you told me who you were and your connection to IRONMAN, I was completely floored. Here I am, talking to the guy who finished 3rd at the 1st ever IRONMAN in 1978.

From that moment on, our paths crossed at various events and activities due to our involvement with the IRONMAN Foundation. We dug up weeds to help restore sacred grounds on the Big Island, volunteered our time with Paradox Sports in Boulder with their adaptive climbing program, and so many other fun times. I’ll admit, up to that point I only knew you from your accomplishment as being the 3rd badass that ever finished an IRONMAN.

It was time to head back to Kona in October of 2018, and you reached out to me to see if I was also headed back to the Big Island. Somehow we connected the dots and realized we were both on the same flights from Denver to Honolulu, and then Kona. The travel angels were doing their magic, I got upgraded to a First Class seat, and there you were sitting in First Class as well. With a little bit of shuffling, our flight attendant made sure we got to seat next to each other.

Strava Releases Year End World Wide Data and Trends

SAN FRANCISCO (December 16, 2020) — Strava, the leading social platform for athletes and the largest sports community in the world with over 73 million athletes, today released its annual Year in Sport data report, revealing a boom in global exercise amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 1.1 billion activities were uploaded to Strava in the last 12 months, a 33% increase from the year prior. During 2020, the Strava community grew by about 2 million new athletes each month.

“During a challenging year, it has been a privilege to connect athletes to what motivates them and help them find their personal best. Community members shared more than a billion activities including nearly 400 million photos with each other, from solitary virtual marathons and Everesting bike rides to midday walks while working from home. And through it all, athletes from around the world cheered each other on, proving that every effort counts and people keep people active.” says Michael Horvath, Strava CEO.

ItCouldBeMe Launches 5k to Raise Money for Cyclists Killed in Nevada

On December 10, a group of people cycling through Nevada were hit from behind by a box truck. Tragically, five of those individuals were killed, and several others injured. As a community, we are deeply saddened and devastated by this tragedy. While our hearts and prayers are with the families and friends of all involved, we want to find a way to pay tribute to, and support, the victims and their families.

In the coming week, take time to run or walk a 5K in honor of the victims. Register below and donate whatever you are able to give by visiting this website.  All proceeds will go to the five victims’ families.  Join us in dedicating 1 kilometer for each of the five cyclists that lost their lives.

If you post on social media, use the hashtag #ItCouldBeMeFor5 to raise awareness for everyone’s safety on the roads & streets of communities across the globe. These were people, each special, and not just a number or a “cyclist on the road”.

Endurance News:

PTO Championship and Challenge Daytona; Triathlon Forever Changed? Maybe so

Daytona Beach–It’s easy to want to compare the Professional Triathlon Organisation’s Championship (PTO) at Challenge Daytona with IRONMAN’s Kona. You really can’t though. If this were boxing, it’s like watching light and middle weight boxers fight versus heavy weights. One is full of action, flurries, speed and rapid fire punches, the other, a war of strength and stamina and seeing who can withstand the most for the longest. There is room in this world for both. There will be fans of both. But for the pros’ yesterday may have been a game changer.

Kona is Kona. It’s a magical kind of place with known foes like heat, the Energy Lab, the winds on the Queen K and the hill on Palani. Daytona, like the backdrop for this race, was about speed and more speed. Like the NASCAR race that put Daytona on the map, these triathletes jockeyed for position all day long. They averaged up to 30 miles per hour on the bike! The road is flat, the only foe is the athlete in front, and the voices in their heads telling them when to make a move or not.

For the pros, with their race contained entirely inside the 2.5 mile oval that is one of the most famous racing venues in the world, it was all right in front of them. Lap after lap. 20 times on the bike, four times on the run, and even twice on the swim. Yes, there is a large lake inside the track along with an RV park, smaller tracks and plenty of open space. The whole thing was a made-for-television event. The race was about speed and making moves.

In the men’s race, Coloradans Matt Hanson, Rudy Von Berg and Sam Long finished 2nd, 5th and 9th respectively.  Both Hanson and Long came from fairly far back after the swim to chase down the leaders and contend for the podium. Hanson had the fastest run of the day with a blistering 5:20/mile pace over the 18k run. While Long made up his deficit mostly on the bike with a fastest bike of the day riding the 80k course in 1:38:24 averaging 30.2 mph! He showed moments of speed on the run trying to catch up and at one point he held second place! Von Berg with a fast swim and bike, ran in contention all day. He and Long battled on the run for a couple of laps creating a buzz in the crowd watching on the jumbo tron—sort of a modern day “Iron War.” Von Berg pushed ahead of Long but slipped back on the last lap finishing just off the podium behind Britain’s George Goodwin, a middle distance specialist and long course veteran Lionel Sanders—who turned in the second fastest bike split and came from far back himself.

5 bicyclists killed, 4 injured after truck hits group on 'retirement ride' in Nevada

LAS VEGAS – On a highway ride to celebrate a cyclist's retirement, five bicyclists were killed and four others were injured in a crash involving a truck, according to authorities. The Thursday morning crash happened on U.S. 95 south of Boulder City, according to Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Jason Buratczuk.  Around 9:40 a.m., a box truck struck a group of about 20 bicyclists. Four men and one woman died at the scene, according to authorities.  The box truck remained at the scene for several hours after the collision, as authorities investigated what caused the crash.  "It doesn't appear to be impairment," Buratczuk said. "It appears to be a tragic accident."

Of the four bicyclists injured, one of the riders was flown to a hospital in a helicopter in critical condition. It appeared the bicyclists were part of an organized ride, Buratczuk said. They had a chase vehicle with them with flashers. The driver of the chase vehicle was injured and transported to a hospital.  The driver of the box truck was not injured.  U.S. Highway 95 southbound will be closed till about 6 p.m. Thursday, according to Nevada Department of Transportation spokesman Tony Illia.

What's New in the 303:

Michael Stone Colorado Multi Sport (Saturday) and Russ Chandler Full Cycle.

https://303cycling.com/executive-director-kate-rau-the-magic-of-the-colorado-high-school-cycling-league/

Kate Rau’s passion for making lives better and helping kids ride through the tunnel of adolescence to becoming adults permeates the core values of the Colorado High School Cycling League. She has been at the forefront of the movement to get more kids on bikes since landing in Colorado to go to college at CU. Starting with her days at SMBA (Singletrack Mountain Bike Adventures) and leading us through the birth of Colorado High School Cycling League, Kate has worked tirelessly to help kids, well, be kids. She works to “reduce the barriers to entry” and to help kids who are overscheduled, feeling contained, and maybe isolated, to feel grounded, and learn to take risk and to experience “the pure wonder of joy while riding a bike.”

The Colorado High School Cycling League has grown exponentially in the last few years and now has 80 teams with about 1,800 kids making up four regions in Colorado. There are teams from Wyoming and New Mexico as well. It’s an organization with a broad reach but a narrow focus. It takes a dedicated staff, coaches and countless volunteers to make it happen. It also takes critical partnerships from corporate sponsors who help fund and facilitate bringing it all together. Kate strives to provide value to all involved with a keen eye to always remembering the goals that Kate says is,  “helping kids feel good about themselves, bringing families together, and connecting the communities that support those values. We want to teach kids about land stewardship and the environment and make sure we do all we can to be inclusive. Everybody scores, nobody is benched.”

303 Endurance was honored to have been chosen as partner of the year which came with some wonderful swag from sponsors: Optic Nerve, Osprey, Primal, Feedback, Yeti and Squirtlube. it has been our honor to help bring more awareness to this valuable part of the community we serve.

Interview with Lisa Roberts:

Lisa is a 6x iron-distance champion and multiple course record holder, making regular appearances on podiums around the world.   She has been a professional triathlete since 2009 and business owner since 2008. A professional triathlete for 12 years, Lisa is now making the shift to elite ultra trail running and other endurance events. She already has 2 wins and 1 course record under her belt.

Lisa is known for her consistency, strength, perseverance, 'can do' and 'never give up' attitude.  She is a relentless presence with closing run speed and persistence to the bitter end, never letting the competition feel content.  She attributes this perseverance after experiencing a turning point in her family life when, at age 11, Lisa's father was in a swimming accident that left him quadriplegic. This experience and her father's positive approach to a devastating life change is part of her moral fiber that gives her endless positivity and willingness to push through.  Lisa started a landscape design consulting business in 2008, in a time that many thought was foolish. She forged on, powered by her belief that her clientele was looking for change and she could provide that.  It turned out to be a bold, successful move.

Lisa truly believes in community, integrity and giving back.  She is a regular at local events - either competing or volunteering. When not racing, Lisa enjoys travelling, baking, landscape design and overzealous home improvement projects.

She has taught bicycle safety classes as a League Cycling Instructor, assists at local events and takes a great interest in helping people of all ages lead active, healthy lifestyles.  She is open, approachable, kind, hard-working, tireless, fair and is a fierce friend.

Watch this space as Lisa builds Spiral Multisport, her training squad promoting an active, healthy and happy lifestyle to people of all ages and abilities. Create the upward spiral and achieve the goals you have set for yourself, following the TriSutto training principles that has created multiple World Champions and Olympians!

The Vice Wine

The Vice Wine is a Napa Valley luxury wine brand made in small batches. Each batch is crafted from single grape varietals sourced from hand selected vineyards, resulting in the best quality wine at the best value.

The "Tri Blend" pays homage to one of the founder's vices, triathlon. Proceeds from this batch benefits the USA Triathlon Foundation. Use the code USAT25 for 25% off single bottle orders (not applicable for gift boxes).

Founded to honor our National Parks and public lands, 4% of proceeds are donated to support America's historic and wild places.

303's Khem Suthiwan is wearing the Women's My Sanctuary Athletic T-Shirt, super soft made from poly cotton blend, is still comfortable even in the heat and humidity of the Yucatan Peninsula!
