The Olympic Complex in Colorado Springs is the flagship training center for the U.S. Olympic Committee and the Olympic Training Center programs. The 110 mile stretch between Boulder and Colorado Springs is one of the fittest and athletic populated areas in the world. Interview with Mike Tiernery

Years ago, I saw some guy riding a unicycle coming down Lookout Mountain as I was riding up with some friends.  I remember saying out loud "do you guys see what I see"?

 

Mike Tiernery has been riding unicycles in epic rides in Colorado and elsewhere.  100 mile Copper Triangle (4 passes), the 48-mile Iron Horse Classic (Durango to Silverton over Coal Bank and Molas passes), or the world record Mauna Kea 14K, Mike does it all on a unicycle.

 

Tierney loves to train by climbing Independence Pass in the spring, when the road had been plowed but is still closed to vehicular traffic. He says he has a passion for climbing hills on his uni, and he likes the simplicity and the “Zen state” it puts him in.

USA TRIATHLON ANNOUNCES 2020 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIATHLON TEAM

USA Triathlon today announced its 2020 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team, comprised of the five athletes who will represent the United States in triathlon competition at this summer’s Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Kevin McDowell (Geneva, Ill.) and Katie Zaferes (Cary, N.C.) were newly announced to the roster, joining Summer Rappaport (Thornton, Colo.), Taylor Knibb (Washington, D.C.) and Morgan Pearson (Boulder, Colo.), who were already qualified.

 

The five members of the Tokyo-bound team have a wealth of experience and success on the international race circuit, with a combined 32 World Triathlon Championship Series medals, 30 World Triathlon Cup medals and 12 World Triathlon Mixed Relay Series medals between them.

 

 

The road to Tokyo 2020

For the first time in history, our triathletes will compete across three medal events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The long journey to be among those chosen to compete for Olympic glory begins in Japan this weekend, at the 2018 ITU World Triathlon Yokohama. In just over two years’ time, 55 men and 55 women be going for Olympic gold in the individual events and then again in country-based teams of four in the Mixed Relay. The qualification period starts on 11 May 2018, and will finish the very same day in 2020.

 

“Tokyo is going to be an extremely important event not only for the International Triathlon Union, but also for the history of our sport and for the athletes competing there”, said ITU President and IOC member, Marisol Casado. “The Olympic Games is the pinnacle of the sport, and to give our athletes the opportunity to earn two medals in the same Games is something of which we should all be very proud. With male and female athletes competing together as a team we will show the world just how committed triathlon is to gender equality, and how our athletes can shine and perform under any circumstances, both individually and as a team”, she said.

 

“For this Qualification period, the key for the National Federations will be to find the balance in the focus of the individual and mixed relay participation in the next two years. It will require a real team effort from all the Federations”, explained Gergely Markus, ITU Sports Director.

 

There will be various ways to qualify for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and earn one of the 55 spots available. As a new addition to the previous qualification criteria, there will be Mixed Relay events counting towards the qualification.

 

The top seven countries on the Mixed Relay Olympic Qualification Ranking as of March 31, 2020, will secure two men’s and two women’s quota places each.

 

Three further countries will be awarded two men’s and two women’s places at a qualification event for the top 18-ranked countries (not including those already qualified) to be held between 1 April and 11 May, 2020. Our Olympic Games hosts Japan are already guaranteed their four places in the Mixed Relay.

 

Via these three methods, 22 places will have been secured, with a further 26 places then available through the Individual Olympic Qualification Ranking.

 

For those countries with 2-2 places already secured by any of the previous qualification pathways, the top 2 athletes in both genders will not be considered in this ranking.

 

Countries with three or more athletes among the top 30 of this ranking will be able to secure a third quota place, otherwise there will be a maximum two per country.

 

The overall Olympic eligibility criteria for any athlete will be finishing in the top 140 of the Individual Olympic Qualification Ranking.

 

The “new flag” rule will be applied again for the qualification for Tokyo 2020. The countries that will be eligible for those places will be the ones which athletes’ are at the best ranking position from the continent on the ITU World Ranking from those countries which didn’t secure any place by any means of the above.

 

Last but not least, a maximum of two invitations will be awarded to countries entitled to receive such places and with eligible athletes according to the IOC criteria and who are represented in the top 180 of the ITU World Ranking.

 

It is important to remember that quota places will be earned by the countries, not the individuals. It remains the decision of each National Olympic Committee which athletes are chosen to take them.

 

Athletes will not have to compete in the individual events of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to be part of the team of the Mixed Relay event, but their country’s quota would not be increased in such cases.

 

 

U.S. Olympic Trials: Katie Ledecky wins 200, 1500 meter freestyle titles

Katie Ledecky secured two Olympic bids on Wednesday at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., winning the 200-meter freestyle and cruising in the 1,500-meter freestyle to qualify in those events for for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

 

A little more than an hour after winning the 200 freestyle in 1:55.11, Ledecky — the world record holder in the 1,500 — swam the fastest 1,500-meter time in the world this year (15:40.50) for victory. Erica Sullivan was second at 15:51.18.

 

Ledecky has the top 10 fastest times in history in the women's 1,500 freestyle. She previously won the 400-meter freestyle final on Monday. Ledecky has won six medals at the Olympics (five gold, one silver), including five at the 2016 games.

Magnificent Maya Kingma wins first Series gold in Leeds

The Netherlands’ Maya Kingma became the queen of the north of England on Sunday afternoon, delivering a near-perfect race to take her first ever Series win at the World Triathlon Championship Series Leeds. Just as she had in the Yokohama season-opener, Kingma was able to break away on the bike, this time with Great Britain’s Jess Learmonth and Sophie Coldwell for company, and the three just grew and grew their lead. Coldwell hung on for a memorable first medal at the top level, but the day belonged to Kingma, who now finds herself top of the world rankings two races in.


The new-look WTCS Leeds course had a few surprises in store once the familiar 1.5km swim in Waterloo Lake had been negotiated, a long climb out of transition and 40km bike course entirely in Roundhay Park, before a 10km run that ended with a fierce incline and a tough finale.  With the swimming skills of British long-distance specialist Lucy-Charles Barclay - on the World Triathlon start list for the first time - and Jess Learmonth setting the pace, the swim strung out quickly, Kingma and Vittoria Lopes (BRA) both well in check with those out front.

 

Sophie Coldwell and Taylor Spivey (USA) completed a front six that managed to carve out a 30-second advantage by the closing stages, while Beth Potter (GBR) and Natalie van Coevorden (AUS) emerged from the second lap with Flora Duffy (BER) for company and ready to test herself on the return to racing.

 

While Learmonth, Coldwell and Kingma were on their bikes and up the first climb efficiently, Spivey, Charles-Barclay and Lopes dropped slightly back and could only form a trio just off the front three.  Potter was chasing to keep up with Duffy, while a third group further back included Katie Zaferes already over a minute back with Valerie Barthelemy (BEL), Amelie Kretz (CAN) and Carolyn Hayes (IRL).

 

Duffy road solo to bridge up to the three chasers and managed to get them organised by lap three, but by that point the damage was done and the gap to the second pack was already close to a minute, 90 seconds to to Potter and Britain’s Non Stanford’s group, two minutes to the likes of Laura Lindemann (GER) and Zaferes.  With two laps to go and the front three working so well, the gap grew to two minutes, and while the groups behind merged, there was now over three minutes to make up on the leaders.

 

Heading down into transition for the last time, Kingma was again into the run shoes fast and out looking fresh. Behind the leaders, Duffy again chose to go it alone and start to hunt down the podium solo after Spivey and Charles-Barclay struggled in T2. Hayes was also rolling the dice, Potter and Cassandre Beaugrand (FRA) going through the gears and setting up a big finish.

 

As Coldwell dropped back it became a shootout for gold between Learmonth and Kingma, neither looking like slowing their pace. Duffy was flying but running out of course, her 10km split of 33’47 nearly 20 seconds faster than Potter who ran her way into the top 10 but couldn’t quite catch Spivey and Charles-Barclay.

 

It wasn’t until the final 500m that Kingma made her decisive move and by that point, Learmonth could not respond. Taking the final climb solo, the 26-year-old was able to soak up the moment, taking the tape with joy. Learmonth’s silver was a typically gutsy display, a delighted Coldwell finishing ten seconds behind her teammate to celebrate a first WTCS medal.

 

Duffy finished fourth, Charles-Barclay managed to out-pace Spivey to fifth, Potter, Beaugrand, Lindemann and Hayes rounding out the top ten.

Through pain and controversy, the ‘Iron Cowboy’ chases 100 triathlons in 100 days

“Iron Cowboy,” Lawrence aims to conquer 100 full-distance triathlons in 100 days. Set to finish Tuesday, he has said he wants to push the limits of human endurance while raising funds for an organization that claims to fight human trafficking.

 

His plan is simple, if maniacal: He hits the local pool at 5:30 a.m. and swims for about 90 minutes. Then he hops on his bike for a loop around Lindon that takes five or six hours. Then, after a break, he starts his daily marathon, which normally takes around seven hours. It all adds up to about 15 hours of daily exercise, which supporters can, and do, follow online or even in person.

But controversy has trailed him, too. Ironman, the corporation that owns the majority of triathlon events worldwide, has urged Lawrence not to use its brand name. Some triathletes have criticized his use of IV injections to stay hydrated, because a dose of more than 100 milliliters in a 12-hour period would be prohibited in a World Anti-Doping Agency signatory event. (WADA, which has no jurisdiction over Lawrence’s event, declined to comment.)

 

The beneficiary of his fundraising is controversial, too: Operation Underground Railroad is a nonprofit supported by former president Donald Trump that claims to fight human trafficking. It is under investigation by Utah prosecutors after reports surfaced of it falsely claiming credit for the results of operations. (In a statement, the organization said it followed the law and would cooperate with any investigation.)

 

Last month, on Day 87, Lawrence answered a video call wearing a red T-shirt, camouflage shorts, electric blue shades and a baseball hat. He was in the middle of that day’s marathon; some supporters flanked him as he walked. He quickly switched off the video and answered questions with the economy of a man in conservation mode. He felt “fantastic,” he said, but wanted to “only focus on the positive things,” such as “good times with family.”

 

Those have been harder to come by lately. In an interview, his wife, Sunny, said Lawrence is “perfectly miserable and ready for this thing to be done.” He is “always in pain,” she said, “and there’s always something that bothers him. He didn’t even start taking any pain relievers until two weeks ago.” He’s been walking the marathon since Day 3 or 4.

He knows well how to endure pain and carry on. He’s a former wrestler turned golfer who tried, unsuccessfully, to go pro. He started his endurance sports career with a four-mile run in 2004, followed by a marathon, then triathlons. In 2010, he set the world record by completing 22 half-distance triathlons in 33 weeks. Two years later, he completed 30 long-distance events in one year.

 

Sunny says his mental resilience has roots in wrestling and golf, but she adds that she never saw anything in her husband that showed such toughness until they lost their mortgage business — and their house and their car — in 2010.  “I hadn’t seen anything in our marriage to show any sign of mental grit until we hit the recession,” she said. “That’s when we had to pull together and, when he went into triathlon, saying he wanted to do some crazy stuff.”

 

In 2015, he took on a seemingly impossible challenge: 50 full triathlons in 50 days in 50 states, which he said he did to increase awareness of childhood obesity and raise money for the now-defunct Jamie Oliver Foundation. Lawrence, who now makes a living as a professional speaker, came under fire because the link for donations on his website didn’t work, though the foundation later confirmed it received the funds. The physical and logistical nightmare was portrayed in the documentary “Iron Cowboy: The Story of the 50:50:50.”

This letter, from me Bill Plock, owner of 303Endurance Network, a native of Colorado, a triathlete and an advocate is in response to your Editor’s Note in the May/June issue of Triathlete Magazine where you wrote:

 

When I first got ready to start this Editor’s Note, I was going to make fun of the Boulder Tri scene. I was going to tell you how I think it’s overrated and I don’t “get” it. I was going to poke to fun of the weirdly terrible bike paths and perpetual poor air quality. I was going to laugh at all the YouTube videos always being filmed everywhere you workout—as if the entire town is just a backdrop for social media… But then the day I started writing, a man with a gun walked into a grocery store here in town and shot 10 people…In reality, I still think the Boulder tri scene is silly. I’ll probably make fun of it again soon…

 

Where do I begin? Let’s see, using a mass murder shooting as a reason to not further bash the Boulder triathlon community, the athletes, and the people who work their asses off to provide infrastructure for safe routes for cyclists seems like a start. But wait, you did then go on to do exactly that… bash the Boulder community and the Boulder triathlon community anyway?

 

And then you go on to say you will probably make fun of Boulder again soon? Seriously? Why? Maybe you should spend some time in the community and apologize.

 

I realize this is your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it. However, as an industry representative speaking on a public platform to a wide audience – especially considering Triathlete’s recent partnership with USA Triathlon – your middle-school-bullying approach is damaging, offensive, and unprofessional.

 

To call the Boulder triathlon scene “overrated,” or triathletes (mostly pro’s) “silly” for making YouTube videos or bike paths “weird” or the air too polluted is simply outrageous.  Did you sit in town council meetings planning those bike paths? You were a pro triathlete, you know how hard sponsorships are, why bash athletes trying to make a social media effort? Where else would you like them to go? And the air pollution—sure, during fire season there are bad days, but you paint a picture for those outside of Boulder or Colorado that is wrong. (If you do the research, you will learn much of our air pollution is also a result of our high frequency of full sun days, combined with wind patterns from other states and countries.) Who are you to judge? 

 

Last I checked, Triathlete Magazine is part of Outside (formerly Pocket Outdoor Media) and is based in Boulder. Am I right? So you have chosen to make fun of the very community in which you work. Why make fun of professional triathletes making YouTube videos while training during a pandemic to try to be relative to their sponsors? Those same athletes who spend time on your podcasts or provide content for your readers and, like you, are trying to make a living in this industry not known to be lucrative. Aren’t we here to help each other?

 

Additionally, Triathlete Magazine’s reach to youth, first-time triathletes, Olympic hopefuls, and Team USA members are now among your front-row audience. You have wielded your PR wand in a terribly damaging and harmful way.

 

The Boulder bike path system is what makes Boulder one of the most bike friendly cities in the country. How many employees at Outside ride those trails? Did you know recently a sister publication of Outside graciously helped gather content for a cyclist killed a few miles south of Boulder to help the community heal? Do you know how hard it is to advocate for what you call, “those weirdly terrible bike paths” that undoubtedly save lives? What’s silly about that? Do you know the local advocacy team at Cyclists for Community? They are friends of mine because I ride with them. I take the time to know their mission. I would love to watch you tell them how silly those paths are at their next fund raiser.

 

So coming out of a pandemic with people anxious to race, and on the heels of a tragic shooting event, you call triathletes in Boulder silly? You call the triathlon community overrated? Overrated compared to what? Did you go to the Colorado Triathlon last weekend and feel the joy of athletes seeing each other again? Do you know Lance Panigutti of Without Limits and how hard he worked to save his business this past year? And you call him and the community overrated? How dare you.

Interview with Sharon Madison and John Genell

Madison was once a professional cyclist, and has since dedicated her life’s work to building a community around the idea that a bike creates freedom and empowerment. She started the bike club at Wish 4 Wheels, providing bikes to second graders at Title 1 schools in Denver, and in the midst of the pandemic she created a new non-profit organization – We Ride 4 — which raises funds to support organizations that promote fitness, health and outdoor adventure for children.

 

We also have John Genell who is a former Board member of Wish for Wheels and helped found We Ride 4 with Sharon.  John comes from a career working in Big 5 Consulting.  John was at Deloitte when I was at Arthur Anderson.  More recently he worked at Grant Thornton and now in the property development business.  He's also an avid cyclist and Chief Ambassador at We Ride 4.

ARZACHENA, Italy — Matt McElroy (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led a group of five Americans Saturday at a World Triathlon Cup race in a 61-man field highlighted by three world champions in Arzachena, Italy. McElroy’s fifth-place finish was his best international result since a string of three consecutive World Triathlon Cup wins in the fall of 2019.

With a time of 55 minutes, 11 seconds on the sprint-distance course, McElroy was 12 seconds off a podium that was led by Great Britain’s Jonathan Brownlee, a two-time Olympic medalist and 2012 World Triathlon champion, in 54:48. Adrien Briffod of Switzerland claimed silver in 54:52 for his first World Triathlon Cup medal since a June 2017 win, while three-time World Triathlon champion Mario Mola of Spain was third in 54:59.

On a warm, dry day in Italy, it was Seth Rider (Germantown, Tenn.) who appeared to be the U.S. favorite through the start of the race. Hungary’s Márk Dévay led after the 750-meter swim, followed by a group of 10 that included Rider. In third after the first transition, the 2014 U.S. Youth Olympian took the lead at one point during the first lap of the bike among a trio that included Dévay and Brownlee.

Rider, McElroy and 2010 Youth Olympian Kevin McDowell (Geneva, Ill.) all remained in the large lead group of up to 24 athletes throughout the three-lap, 19.3-kilometer ride with McDowell and McElroy sixth and seventh at the end of the bike, which was led by Frenchmen Paul Georgenthum and Arthur Berland. Rider was once again the leading American after the second transition, in fourth, until McElroy made his move during the 5-kilometer run.

McElroy vaulted from 11th to fifth in the first lap of the run, and fought to maintain that pace through the finish while Brownlee and Briffod broke away on the second and final lap to lead the race.  McDowell placed 21st in 56:05 and Rider 24th in 56:36. With a time of 57:43, 2016 Olympian Ben Kanute (Geneva, Ill.) was 35th, while Darr Smith (Atlanta, Ga.), who had raced the Olympic-distance World Triathlon Cup Lisbon one week prior, was 47th in 1:00:23.

McElroy’s finish improved his rank in the World Triathlon Olympic Qualification Rankings by one spot. The U.S. will send three men to Tokyo if it maintains three men in the top-30 of the Olympic Qualification Rankings by June 14. Morgan Pearson, who did not compete in Arzachena, is the only U.S. male currently qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team by way of his bronze medal at the World Triathlon Championship Series Yokohama on May 15. All remaining spots on the U.S. Olympic Team will be named via discretion by USA Triathlon’s Games Athletes Selection Committee after June 14.

BRAC Changes Name to Colorado Cycling and Re-defines Mission

Denver, Colorado.  Colorado Cycling (formerly the Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado) is proud to release its new logo and mission statement.  The organization changed its name this spring to reflect its new identity and mission, which is to support the full spectrum of cycling events in our great state.  “Rather than focusing our energy on solely the traditional forms of bicycle racing, the organization is now committed to supporting, enhancing, and growing the sport in all its forms, including road, mountain, track, gravel, cyclocross, triathlon, high school league and fundraising events,” said Andy Johnson, Board President.

 

Colorado Cycling has adopted a new mission statement that reflects this change:

“Colorado Cycling advances the sport by inspiring our community to experience cycling events in the Rocky Mountain region.”

 

In addition, Colorado Cycling has created a new logo for the organization, which illustrates the organization’s 45 years of service to the cycling community.  It features the red rider image that has been part of the organization’s identity for decades, and incorporates the familiar blue, red and yellow of the state flag.

Climate change could push temperatures at the Tokyo Olympics to the 'danger-zone' for athletes, report warns

(CNN)Intense heat and high humidity could pose a serious risk to athletes at this year's Tokyo Olympics, according to a new report.

 

The report, published Wednesday by the British Association for Sustainable Sport, details the concerns of leading athletes and scientists about the health impacts of soaring temperatures in Japan. According to the report, the average annual temperature in Tokyo "has increased by 2.86 degrees Celsius since 1900, more than three times as fast as the world's average."

The Olympics are due to run from July 23 to August 8 -- a time when Japan usually experiences its highest annual temperatures, which are soaring even higher in the warming climate. "I think we're certainly approaching a danger-zone," Great Britain rower and Olympic hopeful Melissa Wilson told the study's authors. "It's a horrible moment when you see athletes cross the line, their bodies fling back in total exhaustion, and then not rise up."

Some events at the upcoming Summer Games have already been moved away from Tokyo amid heat concerns, including the marathon, which will take place nearly 500 miles north of the Japan capital in Sapporo where temperatures are expected to be much cooler.

Canceling Tokyo Olympics is 'essentially off the table,' says IOC member Dick Pound

(CNN)International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound says he believes the Olympic Games will go ahead this year and says the option of canceling the event is "essentially off the table."

Speaking to CNN's Selina Wang, Pound insisted that all indications suggest a "bubble" around those participating in Tokyo can be maintained but he stopped short of guaranteeing that it will be completely safe amid the pandemic.

"Nobody can guarantee anything. I mean, let's be reasonable on that," he said.

"But all the indications are that the bubble can be created and maintained and daily, or whatever the frequency of tests will be, will identify any indications that there may be some people having the virus that are there. They'll be put into isolation right away."

Earlier this year, Pound -- who is the longest-serving member of the IOC -- put the likelihood of the Games going ahead at about 75% but now says the probability is much higher, with experts learning more about the virus everyday.

"None of the folks involved in the planning and the execution of the Games is considering cancellation," he added.

 

What could happen if the Tokyo Olympics get canceled?

(CNN)With a little over two months until the start of the Tokyo Olympics, the possibility of a cancellation looms large over the Games.

As Japan battles a fourth wave of coronavirus infections and a state of emergency in Tokyo and other prefectures remains in place until the end of the month, there is mounting pressure from health experts, business leaders and the Japanese public to call off the Games.

Last week, the Tokyo Medical Practitioners Association, an organization of about 6,000 doctors in Tokyo, penned a letter calling for a cancellation, while a petition which garnered 350,000 signatures in nine days in support of a cancellation has been submitted to organizers.

Also last week, the CEO of leading Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten said that holding the Games amid the pandemic amounts to a "suicide mission" -- among the strongest opposition so far voiced by a business leader.

However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has remained adamant that the Olympics, already postponed by a year amid the pandemic, will be able to get underway on July 23.

Organizers have released a playbook, the final version of which is expected next month, outlining a series of countermeasures that they say will ensure the Games can take place in a safe and secure way, even as thousands of athletes from around the world descend on Tokyo.

With the Winter Olympics in Beijing now less than a year away, officials have also said that the Games won't be postponed again and that a cancellation would be the likeliest option if it's deemed unsafe to hold the Games from the rescheduled start date in July.

Mountain Swim Series 2021 -  has an exciting line-up of swims for this year and are including one additional race, a 500 YD swim at the Solstice Sunset Swim event. This distance will be a great opportunity for new open water swimmers, new triathletes, and KIDS! Any kid who participates in this race will be receiving a finisher prize!

 

The dates for the swim series are as follows:

Solstice Sunset Swim – June 26th, 2021: Starting earlier, at 3pm this year! This event includes a 1.2 mi, 2.4 mi, and the NEW 500 YD swims!

Registration closes on Sunday June 20th, and if you sign up after June 10th, we cannot guarantee that we will have the correct shirt size for you.

Carter Lake – July 17th, 2021: No day of registration. This is a 3mi out-and-back swim!

Gravel, Heating up in Trinidad, PX 160 Doubled Riders from Last Year

Thanks to all riders who rode with us at Pony Xpress Gravel 160! It was a great day, and we saw some fast times. Congrats Whiteny Allison, Lauren DeCrescen, Flavia Oliveira, and Jessica Cygan who all broke the women’s course record! Congratulations are also due to Cory Lockwood, Jim Snitzer, Nick Gould, James Osborne, Mark Currie, Zack Allison, and David Griffen who all broke the men’s course record! Jonathan Cavner deserves an honorable mention for setting last year’s course record at 5:11 and almost beating it this year once again.

We had amazing growth and are happy to announce that we doubled the number of entries from last year. We also saw more participants in the160 KM distance than ever before, and a record number of female riders. In addition, riders came from seven different states to race with us. Thank you gravel grinding community for making all of this possible! 

We would like to thank all the Pro athletes that came to Trinidad and competed. Nearly twenty active Pro riders attended, setting another event record.

TOKYO BOUND!

What a race it was in Yokohama! With a dominant performance on the bike, 23-year-old Taylor Knibb qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team via her gold-medal showing. And Morgan Pearson, picking off people with a blistering 29:30 10k,  became the first U.S. man to qualify for the Tokyo Games by snagging the bronze in the men's race.

 

Knibb and Pearson join Summer Rappaport as the first three U.S. athletes to qualify for the Olympic Triathlon Team — the rest of the team will be named via discretion by USA Triathlon's Games Athlete Selection Committee.

Interview with Taylor Knibb

Taylor Knibb and Morgan Pearson qualified for the U.S. Olympic triathlon team with podium finishes at a World Series event in Yokohama, Japan, on Saturday.  Knibb, at 23 set to become the youngest U.S. Olympic triathlete since the sport was added in 2000, led an American one-two in the women’s race with Summer Rappaport, who in 2019 became the first U.S. triathlete to qualify for Tokyo.

 

“I wasn’t really thinking about [the Olympics],” Knibb said, according to USA Triathlon. “I was just trying to get to the finish line.”

 

Knibb and Rappaport will be joined on the Olympic team by one more woman, a committee discretionary selection. A prime candidate is Katie Zaferes, the discretionary selection in 2016 who was the top American in the World Series in 2017, 2018 and 2019, winning the world title in 2019.

Taylor Knibb was inspired to become a triathlete after she watched her mom, Leslie Knibb, compete in an IRONMAN race and noticed the positive atmosphere. She tried a kids’ race and was hooked on the sport from there, working her way through USA Triathlon’s youth elite and junior elite pipelines. Up to this day, her favorite part of competing in triathlons is the camaraderie within the triathlon community, as well as the challenge of always growing and improving within the sport. In high school, she joined her school’s cross-country team while continuing to compete in triathlons. She was named the Washington D.C. Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year and the D.C. State Athletic Association Runner of the Year in both 2014 and 2015. She was the 2015 and 2016 USA Triathlon Junior Elite national champion, the 2015 ITU Junior World Championships silver medalist, and 2016 and 2017 ITU Junior world champion. Also, in 2017, she became the youngest woman to earn a spot on the podium at an ITU World Triathlon Series race after she won silver at the WTS stop in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Then in 2018, she earned the title of ITU Under-23 World Champion. Knibb considers the ITU Under-23 World Championships to be one of her favorite moments of her career because she accomplished a solid performance across all three disciplines. Knibb currently runs NCAA Division I cross-country and track & field at Cornell University, where she is pursuing a degree in psychology.

 

Taylor Knibb was crowned 2015 and 2016 USA Triathlon Junior Elite national champion, 2015 ITU Junior World Championships silver medallist, and 2016 and 2017 ITU Junior world champion. Also, in 2017, she became the youngest woman to earn a spot on the podium at an ITU World Triathlon Series race after she won silver at the WTS stop in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Then in 2018, Taylor earned the title of ITU Under-23 World Champion.

TAYLOR KNIBB QUALIFIES FOR 2020 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIATHLON TEAM WITH GOLDEN RACE IN YOKOHAMA

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Taylor Knibb, a 23-year-old Cornell University graduate from Washington, D.C., qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team with a gold-medal performance at the World Triathlon Championship Series in Yokohama, Japan. Knibb becomes the youngest woman in history to make the U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team.

 

Summer Rappaport (Thornton, Colo.), the only other U.S. triathlete already qualified for Tokyo based on her finish at the Tokyo ITU World Olympic Qualification Event in 2019, joined Knibb on the podium with silver.

 

The race in Yokohama marked the second and final auto-qualification opportunity for the U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team. With Knibb and Rappaport having now punched their tickets to Tokyo, the third and final spot on the women’s team will be named via discretion by USA Triathlon’s Games Athlete Selection Committee. Knibb has been the USA Triathlon National Team’s youngest member since she first made the team in 2017. A triathlete since childhood, she grew up competing in USA Triathlon’s youth and junior elite circuit. She went on to win the 2016 and 2017 Junior World Championships and the 2018 Under-23 World Championships — one of just three women ever to capture world titles at both the Junior and U23 levels. Knibb is a 2020 graduate of Cornell, where she ran NCAA track and cross-country for four years while balancing her elite triathlon career. She also joined the Cornell swim team her senior year. Today, Knibb trains in Boulder, Colorado, with Origin Performance Squad, an elite international triathlon training group.

 

In 2017, Knibb became the youngest athlete in history to medal in a World Triathlon Championship Series event when she earned silver in Edmonton, Canada. Today’s gold in Yokohama marks her first-ever World Triathlon Championship Series victory.

 

Saturday’s race featured a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run. Knibb executed her race in signature style — starting with a top-five swim, then breaking away on the bike alongside the Netherlands’ Maya Kingma about 25k into the 40k course.

 

By the time they hit the second transition, Knibb and Kingma had a 90-second gap on the rest of the field. Knibb quickly moved into the lead on the run, leaving Kingma behind and clocking a 35-minute, 9-second 10k. She broke the tape in a total time of 1 hour, 54 minutes, 27 seconds — 30 seconds clear of Rappaport, who ran her way through the field to take the silver medal. Kingma rounded out the podium in 1:55:05.

 

“It was an awesome race — and thank you to Maya and all the other racers,” Knibb said. “I wasn’t really thinking about (the Olympics). I was just trying to get to the finish line, so one thing at a time! But I’m extremely grateful. Maya was so good through the technical sections, so I learned a lot and I have a lot of work to do on that part, but I was just trying to stay focused.”

 

For Rappaport, the silver marked her second straight podium in Yokohama. The last year the race was held, in 2019, Rappaport was part of a U.S. podium sweep, taking silver alongside Katie Zaferes (gold) and Taylor Spivey (bronze).

 

“Japan is one of my favorite places to race, and I love coming back to Yokohama to race year after year,” Rappaport said. “I was so happy we were able to hold the races here under safe conditions, and I’m so happy I was able to come back here and be part of a 1-2 American finish. I feel like today I really found my competitive fire again.”

 

Spivey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) finished just off the podium in fourth place, 18 seconds behind Kingma.

 

Also racing for the U.S. were Kirsten Kasper (North Andover, Mass.), who placed 14th in 1:56:25; 2019 world champion and 2016 U.S. Olympian Katie Zaferes (Cary, N.C.), who was 22nd in 1:57:12; and Renée Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J.), who was 45th in 2:03:20.

 

The elite season heads next to Lisbon, Portugal, from May 21-23. The Lisbon races include individual World Triathlon Cup events and a Mixed Relay competition. The Mixed Relay will debut as an Olympic medal event at the Tokyo Games.

Gwen Erffmeyer Inglis Official Obituary, Rest in Peace

Gwen Erffmeyer Inglis died on May 16, 2021, as the result of an impaired driver who struck her while Gwen was doing what she loved, riding her bike.

 

Gwen was born on October 12, 1974 to Gerald and Carol Erffmeyer. In high school she was very active, playing basketball, volleyball and running track. She went on to play basketball and was an All-American high jumper at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she received her degree in accounting. For the past 14 years, Gwen worked as Manager of Government Account Compliance at Brown and Caldwell.

 

In 2004, Gwen discovered her love of cycling and began racing. This love of bikes led her to meet her husband, Mike. In 2008 they were married. As fellow cycling enthusiasts, they traveled to bike races all over the country together, often both competing once or twice in the same day, frequently both standing on podiums. She held numerous national and state champion titles. You might also see them on the tandem together, Mike on the front as the pilot, and Gwen as the stoker on the back. The words “Power Couple” were frequently heard referring to this dynamic duo. Besides being teammates on and off the bike, they were best friends, lovers of life, who lived life to the fullest. Updated team standings for The Collins Cup as the battle for automatic qualification continues. Athletes are ‘In The Hunt’ if they have not yet raced in 2021 but have a strong 2019/2020 points average and are in a position to potentially qualify once they have raced in 2021. This includes athletes who have been on maternity leave and to qualify for The Collins Cup would need to race at least once in 2021.

Team USA Highlights

Sam Long is the new Team USA #1 as a result of scoring 102.33 points at St George putting him over 1 point ahead of the next closest USA man - Rudy von Berg.  Rookie Sophie Watts is Team USA #4 as a result of 85.96 and 85.81 points finishes at Texas and St George respectively.

Team Internationals Highlights

Jeanni Metzler moves to Team Internationals #3, pushing Sarah Crowley and Ellie Salthousedown to #4 and #5 respectively meaning Ellie loses her position as an automatic qualifier. Jackson Laundry’s 94.24 point result in St George rockets him up to #8 amongst a tightly pack of International men with just under 5 points separating #3 Sam Appleton down to #8 Jackson.

U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM QUALIFICATION ON THE LINE AT WORLD TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES YOKOHAMA

U.S. Olympic hopeful triathletes will have a chance to punch their tickets to Tokyo at this week’s World Triathlon Championship Series event in Yokohama, Japan, which serves as the second and final auto-qualifier for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team. In addition to the elite race, a World Paratriathlon Championship Series event is also scheduled.

All races are set for Saturday, May 15, in Japan, which is late Friday night, May 14, for most of the United States. All events will be broadcast live at TriathlonLIVE.tv; monthly and annual subscriptions are available for purchase. The races will also be streamed live on FloTrack with a subscription.

The World Paratriathlon Championship Series event kicks off the action at 5:50 p.m. ET on May 14/6:50 a.m. local time on May 15 (the paratriathlon race is not an auto-qualifier for the U.S. Paralympic Team). The elite women follow at 9:16 p.m. ET on May 14/10:16 a.m. local time on May 15, and the elite men are scheduled for 12:06 a.m. ET on May 15/1:06 p.m. local time on May 15.

In Yokohama, elite athletes will cover an Olympic-distance course featuring a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 1-kilometer run centered around Yamashita Park and the Port of Yokohama. Elite paratriathletes will race a sprint-distance course with a 750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run.

 

Olympic Qualification

The U.S. will send a maximum of three women and three men to the Tokyo Olympic Games for triathlon. Summer Rappaport (Thornton, Colo.) is the only athlete currently qualified for the U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team, by way of her fifth-place finish at the Tokyo ITU Olympic Qualification Event in August 2019.

Because Rappaport is already qualified, only one woman can qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team in Yokohama. Since no men have qualified to date, up to two men can punch their ticket to Tokyo by way of a qualifying performance in Yokohama. After Yokohama, all remaining spots will be selected via discretion by the USA Triathlon Games Athlete Selection Committee.

In Yokohama, athletes can auto-qualify for the U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team in the following scenarios:

In the women’s race, the first U.S. athlete finishing on the podium, who has not already qualified for the team, will earn automatic selection. (E.g., only one U.S. woman can auto-qualify at this event, and she must be on the podium).

Because no U.S. men were auto-selected from the 2019 ITU World Olympic Qualification Event, the highest-placed U.S. man finishing within the top-eight overall will be selected to the team.

Two men may be selected to the team at Yokohama, in the event that both men finish on the podium.

In the days following Yokohama, the USA Triathlon Games Athlete Selection Committee may, but is not required to, issue a limited number of “early discretionary nominations” on or before May 20, 2021. Any remaining slots not filled at one of the two auto-selection events, and not named as “early discretionary nominations,” will be issued via final nomination to the team by the USA Triathlon Games Athletes Selection Committee after June 15, 2021.

U.S. Athletes to Watch

The U.S. women bring a strong contingent to Yokohama, led by the trio who swept the podium at the 2019 Yokohama race — Katie Zaferes (gold), Rappaport (silver) and Taylor Spivey (bronze).

Headlining the women’s start list is Zaferes (Cary, N.C.), the 2019 World Triathlon champion and 2016 U.S. Olympian. Zaferes had a breakout season in 2019, winning five of eight races in the World Triathlon Series and earning silver in a fifth. She crashed out of the 2019 Tokyo test event, missing her first chance at Olympic auto-qualification, but she went on to capture the world title in Lausanne, Switzerland, two weeks later. Zaferes also reached the overall World Triathlon Series podium in 2018 (silver) and 2017 (bronze).

Spivey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) holds the No. 2 spot on the start list. She was just off the overall World Triathlon Series podium in 2019, placing fourth in the season-long standings. Spivey led the U.S. women at the 2020 World Triathlon Championship in Hamburg, Germany, with a fourth-place finish.

Rappaport will compete in Yokohama at No. 3 on the start list, though her spot in Tokyo is already secure. The four-time World Triathlon Series medalist and eight-time World Triathlon Cup champion had a comeback season in 2019, placing a career-best fifth in the overall World Triathlon Series standings.

 

Also set to compete for the U.S. women are Taylor Knibb (Washington, D.C.) and Tamara Gorman (Rapid City, S.D.), two of only three women in World Triathlon history to have won individual world titles at both the Junior and Under-23 levels. Kirsten Kasper (North Andover, Mass.), a nine-time World Cup medalist who placed fourth overall in the 2018 World Triathlon Series, and Renée Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J.), a 10-time World Cup medalist, will also toe the line. On the men’s side, Morgan Pearson (Boulder, Colo.) and Matt McElroy (Huntington Beach, Calif.) are No. 19 and 20 on the start list, respectively. What's New in the 303:

The Freedom Of the Bike and Waterton Canyon–Inspired by Paraglider in CA

As I took a long walk on a beach near Santa Barbara, I saw a paraglider hugging the cliffs a couple a hundred feet above. I kept walking wondering how the pilot got there as I knew it was a remote area. As I meandered I saw an old set of stairs. So I climbed them and emerged on a hard packed single track trail hugging the cliff high above.

I walked, a little cautiously, and suddenly I saw a bike perched on the ledge and a man unpacking a paraglider. Turns out it was a motobecan e-bike and the man rides here with his paraglider, unpacks it, ditches the bike in the bushes and flies for hours above the ocean—depending on the winds. He told me he once climbed to 7,000 feet off the coast of Carpentria about 40 miles southeast of here.

But the point is, he rode his bike. Here surfers ride their bikes to find uncrowded surf and deserted beaches, often on e-bikes. So many people seem to bike here to do something else. It made me think of Colorado and some opportunities we have to bike and recreate.

Fishing and Waterton canyon came to mind. Waterton Canyon was built in the late 1870’s as a railroad (of course) that connected Denver to south park and beyond. Companies competed for mining freight and thus railroads carved out beds in most of the canyons we now ride or drive. Rail service stopped in 1937 and the tracks were ripped up in the 1940’s as scrap metal for the war. In 1983, Denver Water constructed the 200 foot Strontia Springs dam and what remained was a very smooth gravel access road closed to cars, but open to bikes and pedestrians.

A parking lot at the mouth of the canyon gives access to this 6.5 mile road that ends just passed the dam. Where the road ends, the Colorado Trail begins and ends 486 miles later in Durango (550 by bike). If you travel east from this parking lot you can access the beginning of the High Line Canal. Overall the road gains 650 feet in elevation making it a gentle grade.

Interview with Bobby McGee and Sue Reynolds

Our guests this week are Bobby McGee and Sue Reynolds. 

As with all interviews, as you research and prepare you learn what incredible contributors these guests are to endurance sport.  Bobby McGee is no exception.  Bobby McGee has played an integral role in the development of top athletes with USA Triathlon, as well as several Olympians and top-ranked ITU stars. He is the author of “Run Transformation,” The World’s Best Run Training Course.  He also wrote Run Workouts for Runners and Triathletes. The Forward in that book is by Tim Noakes who established the Central Governor theory and leading Physiologists.

Sam Long, “Absolutely a Break Through Race.”

St. George Utah, May 1st 2021–For the last couple of years they have exchanged blows on social media and swapped Strava KOM’s on Mt. Lemmon, but yesterday they battled in person to very end.  Sam Long and Lionel Sanders ran shoulder to shoulder for last three miles of IRONMAN 70.3 St. George, the North American 70.3 Championship. If it had been a 70.1, Sam may have won, but with an obvious final grimace, Sanders had one last kick and pulled away in the final turns and edged Long by five seconds.

Both men collapsed at the finish line where the emotion and pain of the effort was clear when they stood and embraced like two prize fighters with nothing else to give. The made for the movies ending culminated a day that saw Long and Sanders make up time on the bike putting them in position to chase down the leaders on the run that included Boulder’s Rudy Von Berg who finished fourth.

For Sam Long this was a breakthrough race. He knew that if he found himself in the exact position he did, that all his hard work had paid off. He knew Sanders was probably the one to beat and his respect (maybe admiration) for Sanders was obvious at the finish line.

During the broadcast, analyst and pro triathlete Dede Griesbauer (who did an amazing job) thought Long’s move near the top of the last hill about 3 miles out may have been too soon. He caught the pack on the hill and then slipped back near the top. Was his last match burnt? Nope, and he said when asked about it, “my plan all along was to push the final 3 miles. I knew they are downhill and that I can run down quite well. I was struggling to stay with them on the uphills so had to give it everything I had.”

The 2021 Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN 70.3 North American Championship St. George will offer 250 qualifying slots and 50 Women For Tri slots to the 2021 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in St. George.

This is exciting to see an IRONMAN race go down with so many pros competing.

 

Outpouring of Support for Daniela Ryf as the World Champ Opens Up About Her Sexuality

Ryf’s long-time coach Brett Sutton also commended her for her courage in doing the interview and confirmed they had split ways—but that there was “no behind-the-scenes gossip” and that the interview had no influence on the coaching decision. It was simply time for a new path for each.

Sutton, the legendary and controversial coach, worked with Ryf for eight years and ushered her from a long ITU career to her nine world titles across the Ironman and 70.3 distance, establishing her as one of the greatest triathletes of all time. “It’s been a great journey,” he said. “I’m proud to have been able to be a part.”

However, the COVID pandemic caused frustration “but also enlightenment” for an athlete who loves racing, he said, and gave her a chance to evaluate her achievements and step outside of the triathlon bubble. She also noted in both the Swiss interview and to Triathlete that she had returned to school to finish her degree in the last year. Sutton said that decision gave her an opportunity to think about her future too.

 

The 10 Most Common First-Time Triathlete Mistakes

Triathlon, for better or worse, has a lot of moving parts. It isn’t nearly as simple as a regular running event, and combining swim-bike-run into a single day makes things exponentially more complicated. For some triathletes, their first race can feel like a minefield with pitfalls at every turn, but if you can steer clear of a few common mistakes, you’ll have more fun. With that in mind, here are 10 common first-time triathlete mistakes and how you can easily avoid them on race day:

#1: Not being familiar with swimming in open water

For all kinds of very appropriate reasons, most of our swim training occurs in a pool. But for your triathlon, most of us will swim in an open-water environment—such as a lake. While you may think that these two things would be pretty similar, it turns out they are not, and that mistake is a common one among new triathletes. First, pool water is (hopefully) crystal clear and allows you to see the bottom, which you can easily reach. Most lakes, and most non-pool triathlon swim venues in general, are murky enough so you can’t see your hand in front of your face, let alone the bottom.

Solution: A lot of triathletes find this lack of visibility to be disconcerting, so getting any kind of experience with a non-pool swim environment before race day can help you get used to the feel of open-water swimming. If you can’t find an open-water swim option before your race, you can practice swimming in your pool with your eyes closed at short intervals (or squint or use a pair of badly-scratched goggles) during the weeks leading up to race day. It’s not exactly the same, but it’s better than nothing!

#2: Not practicing running after biking

#3: Forgetting gear / having too much gear in the transition area

#4: Can’t find your bike / racking spot during transition

#5: Going off-course on the swim

#6: Getting the “what” of fueling wrong

#7: Getting the “how much” of fueling and hydrating wrong

#8: Getting the “when” of fueling and hydrating wrong

#9: Not knowing the rules

#10: Nothing new on race day!

 

What's New in the 303:

Lookout Mountain, Historical Climb for Over 100 years

Since the popular cycling ap Strava became a thing, Lookout Mountain in Golden has been climbed by approximately 25,000 cyclists 248,000 times—which is a tiny fraction of the actual times it has been scaled since it was completed in 1914.

In 1908 the letter “M” representing the School of Mines was painted on Lookout Mountain, about 4,000 years after native Americans left numerous campsites in the area and six years before the Lariat Loop Trail road was completed. In 1911 William “Cement Bill” Williams had a vision to build a scenic road to attract tourist to Golden and with many investors including Adolph Coors and Charles Boettcher (as in Boettcher mansion at the top) it was finished in 1914. In 1915 the American Automobile Associated named it the top scenic road in America. Before the road existed tourists could take a funicular to the top and visit a real estate office selling parcels of land. That office is located where TV towers now reside. (You can still see the scar of the funicular and if you look across the valley, there was another funicular that ascended South Table Mountain to serve a casino and dance hall on top of Castle Rock before the KKK took it over in the 1920’s.)

If you know where to look you can still find remnants of a watering station to help cool cars climbing the mountain in the early years. In 1917 Buffalo Bill was buried at the top and is now a popular place to rest after the 4.6 mile climb from the pillars at the base of the mountain. The classic timed route (and race) begins at the Pillars and finishes just before the turn to the grave.

Interview with Michael Murphy

1.6 seconds. That's how long it takes to fall two stories. That's how long it takes for life to change.

When Michael Murphy was 21, he fell off of a roof at college and landed flat on his back, severing his spine. Fitbit co-founder: Future for fitness is well beyond the wrist

A Fitbit used to be a little gadget to count your steps. Those days are long gone: Fitbits are now continuous heart and sleep monitors, with aspirations that go even deeper. Now owned by Google, Fitbit is still creating new fitness trackers, like the new Luxe. The company's subscription-based Fitbit Premium service continues to add new wellness routines, including celebrity guides such as Deepak Chopra.

 

Where do things go next? Will Fitbit ever venture off-wrist? How can these trackers possibly assist with diseases like COVID-19?  Fitbit co-founder and CTO Eric Friedman offers some insights on where Fitbit is at now, and where things are headed next.

 

Fitbit plans to continue exploring more advanced sensors on its bigger watches, while letting sensor tech trickle down over time into more optimized, smaller, lower-cost bands. "Because they have a larger battery, and kind of more mass, it's easier to try out brand new sensors in them and learn," Friedman says of last year's sensor-studded Fitbit Sense -- which added temperature, a stress-sensing electrodermal sensor and an electrocardiogram, or ECG -- compared to the much more pared-down new Fitbit Luxe, which leans mostly on its optical heart-rate sensor for things like sleep and stress measurements.

 

Friedman makes the comparison to where heart rate on wearables was years ago, living mainly on big watches while smaller bands just measured steps. The optical heart-rate sensor is also where the most evolution has happened, adding a lot of extra algorithm-based insights that didn't exist before. "When we first launched heart rate in our smartwatch, it was really about a kind of workout experience," Friedman says of where things were seven years ago. "But as things progressed, we started to be able to tease out more and more from heart rate."

 

He sees heart-rate variability as an important new metric, and related to that, atrial fibrillation. Fitbit recently finished a 500,000-person AFib study, but unlike the Apple Watch, most Fitbits don't measure estimated atrial fibrillation through the optical heart-rate sensor. For that, you'd need a Fitbit Sense with its ECG feature.

This van trip kicks off with a lovely dose of #americana – some ball sports, some lively hockey, some bike racing, kids running around, the requisite amount of dirt and dust, loads of campers and RVs, ample flag flying and one helleva sunset . I took the @canonusa out to capture all the feels.

 

Life these days offers glimpses of normalcy and it feels really *really* good.  Also can I get an amen for @dippindots ?! I haven’t had these in probably 20 years. What a treat.

 

Ok so where are we? We’re in a large sports complex park in Prescott, AZ. Here for a mountain bike race, I’m experiencing for the first time this parking lot-event style camping vibe.

This wouldn’t be my top vanlife venue choice on a regular basis …but for this event and experience it’s totally fine. This location boasts temps a full 20-25 degrees than in Phoenix so we’re enjoying the nice cool evening temps and the escape from the big-city-heat.

 

Pros: restrooms close by, lots of friendly humans around, safe.

Cons: all the humans. And pavement.

 

Saturday’s race went GREAT! I actually warmed up for this race and implemented lessons I learned in March’s bike race … and took the win! I raced women intermediate 40-49, won my age group.  More importantly I felt great – I executed food, warmup and race strategies. I hit the opening stretch and hole shot into the first climb, at the front, and it paid off. I got more and more comfortable with the fast & flowy portions of the course as the race went along. We raced at noon so I did some yoga and a walk beforehand. Not normally things I’d do pre race but I wanted to keep my face out of my phone as I sat there nervously waiting for my start.

 

Van-Life and Endurance Sports

Even with night-time temperatures dipping into the low 30’s, high 20’s it was still comfortable in the van. Robb campground reported being cold and the high winds interrupting their sleep. Neither were an issue for “Johnny.”

 

Cooking was as easy as being at home, though it did require a bit more planning / prep work. I’m pretty sure I could have made hot apple pie, had I taken my Alpine Oven along on the trip.

    • Let me tell you about my rides in Tucson.  50 mile ride around Tucson on what is called "The Loop".  It's a series of well paved and lane lined bike paths that goes around Tucson.  Cool windy paths through the desert and cactus.  A similar ride would be Confluence Park, Cherry Creek Trail, 470 Trail, S. Platte back to Confluence.  Only Tucson faster and wider.  More open for sure. 
    • 1st - a huge shoutout to Tucson Endurance Performance Center.  I rented a 2021 Cervelo R Series and it rode beautifully.

Interview with Roderick Sewell

Roderick Sewell has overcome challenges from a very early age.  He was born with the tibia bones missing in his legs. His mother decided to have his legs amputated at age one to improve his mobility. The cost of affording his prosthetic legs was so high it led to the family leaving their home when he was age seven and enduring several years of homelessness, before settling in Birmingham, AL, United States of America, with the help of friends and other family. 

 

Because of a tough childhood, Sewell was forced to live homeless in San Diego. When he became involved with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, an organization that helps to provide disabled athletes with a path to success as well as running legs, his life quickly changed for the better..

 

He won gold in his international debut at the 2014 Para Pan Pacific Championships in Pasadena. He learned how to swim by his coach and mentor, Alan Voisard, at the Mission Valley YMCA in San Diego when he was ten years old.

Des Linden Smashes 50K World Record

Des Linden broke the 50K world record on Tuesday after running an amazing time of 2:59:54 in Oregon. Running in the first ultra-distance event of her career, Linden shattered the previous record of 3:07:20 that Great Britain’s Aly Dixon set in 2019 at the 50K world championships in Romania. After getting ahead of Dixon’s record pace right from the start, she never looked back, and Linden’s final time worked out to an average pace of 3:36 per kilometre.

 

Lionel Sanders, Skye Moench take IRONMAN 70.3 Texas titles

This excerpt from the story on the Tri227 site -

Womens: Moench, who won the memorable IRONMAN European Championship, Frankfurt as Sarah True faded in the final stages in the heat ran a strong 1:20:43. While that gave up more than five minutes to the speedy feet of Jeanni Metzler (RSA), it was enough to take the win. Sophie Watts (USA) completed the podium, ahead of Heather Jackson and Morrison, who finished the day in fifth.

 

Mens:

Sanders held strong at the front over the second half of the run too, clocking a 1:11:11 half marathon and a winning margin of just over a minute, from Ben Kanute who battled Sam Long all through the run, making the pass in the last half mile to reach the line just five seconds ahead of the fast-improving youngster. Neither could relax, with Matt Hanson’s best of the day 1:09:16 leaving him just nine seconds short of a podium finish.

What's New in the 303:

 

From Galveston To Cherry Creek, CO Triathletes with Some Big Smiles and Fast Finishes; Betsy Mercer Overcomes 2019 DNF for 4th

Colorado triathletes raced this weekend, in Texas and Colorado. In Galveston Texas, not only did the Colorado pros make a big impact, but one well known age grouper, Betsy Mercer raced in redemption of her 2019 attempt in Galveston where she was stopped 100 yards from the finish line because of weather. At Cherry Creek State Park, The Barking Dog Duathlon kicked off the multi-sport season with about 150 athletes racing.

 

Betsy finished fourth in her age group but cried at the finish line, not because she finished, but because her friend Michael Jones finished his first 70.3. Said Betsy, “I didn’t cry this time when I crossed the finish line, I cried when Michael did. That’s the beauty of triathlon, the community you’re a part of.” 

 

 

Ride or Die, a Women’s Cycling Movement

Matt Miller, owner of BASE Performance invited me to ride last Saturday, not an uncommon invitation as we have ridden many times. I had sort of decided to do a different ride in Denver. But Matt, said I might want to make the effort as there could be as many as 80 people riding, some from the BASE team and this new group he is sponsoring called Ride or Die. Of course I was intrigued.

As it turned out the groups left at different times and when the BASE team left the other group hadn’t arrived. Three hours later upon my return, the parking lot at BASE headquarters was filled with women cyclists all buzzing from a ride. Some were friends of mine who I had no idea would be there. There was a cooler of drinks and prizes and swag and I felt a fun energy. I asked my friend Becky Furuta, no stranger to the peloton from the highest levels about what I was seeing. I know they had ridden some gravel, and some road. I saw bikes of all sorts. I didn’t know anything about this group. Becky described it as, “grassroots racing and riding, the goal is fun and camaraderie without all the staunchness and elitism that’s driving people away from the road. There’s a sense of community and fun absent the usual rivalries. I think that’s really the point of these beginner/community rides – not that they’re easy or for beginners, but that they’re accessible at every level and focused on mixing training with fun and a social component. It’s a sustainable model, and I hope it sticks around.”

Inside Ronan McLaughlin’s Everesting world record bike

Ronan McLaughlin, a tech writer for CyclingTips, set an Everesting world record of 6:40:54 on March 29 on a 5.55kg (12.24lb) bike that he constructed over many months, carefully weighing the benefits and drawbacks of each piece, both literally and figuratively, and even changing his pedaling position to fit onto a smaller frame and reduce his frontal profile.

“It’s often overlooked in Everesting, but half the event is downhill,” McLaughlin said. “When you are descending, it doesn’t count towards your elevation, but it does count towards your time. So I was looking to get downhill as fast as I could.”

To maximize the efficiency up and down, McLaughlin selected Mamore Gap in his native Ireland, a dead-straight stretch of road on a hill that averages 14 percent.

For the bike, McLaughlin selected a Giant TCR Advanced SL 2021 frameset, and then went to work on modifications — beginning with himself.

USA Duathlon Virtual Run-Bike-Run, presented by RaceX, to benefit USA Triathlon Foundation’s General Fund

USA Triathlon today announced the opening of registration for the second annual USA Duathlon Virtual Run-Bike-Run presented by RaceX, a virtual multisport challenge set for April 15-May 3.

The event is free to enter. Participants have the option to make a $35 donation to the USA Triathlon Foundation and receive a finisher’s medal, or a $55 donation to receive a finishers’ medal and a USA Triathlon-branded premium wall-mounted medal hanger. All donations will go to the USA Triathlon Foundation’s general fund to help open pathways for all to swim, bike and run.

The 19-day challenge offers beginner and experienced athletes alike the opportunity to test themselves at the start of the racing season — whether they plan to return to in-person racing in 2021 or tackle their first-ever multisport event. Athletes can complete the challenge on their own time and at their own pace, from anywhere in the world. Registration is open now, and athletes can sign up at any point until the conclusion of the challenge on May 3. Click here to register.

The Virtual Run-Bike-Run is a cumulative challenge, and participants can track their progress on the FitRankings platform using run and bike leaderboards sortable by total mileage, time and elevation gain. Athletes will receive messages from USA Triathlon and FitRankings as they hit overall running and cycling milestones toward traditional duathlon distances: sprint (7.5-kilometer run and 20-kilometer bike) and standard (15k run, 40k bike).

Ironman and Paralympic hopeful Roderick Sewell.  Roderick Sewell completed Kona in 2019, he won gold in his international debut at the 2014 Para Pan Pacific Championships in Pasadena. He learned how to swim by his coach and mentor, Alan Voisard, at the Mission Valley YMCA in San Diego when he was ten years old. Because of a tough childhood, Sewell was forced to live homeless in San Diego. When he became involved with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, an organization that helps to provide disabled athletes with a path to success as well as running legs, his life quickly changed for the better.

Michael Murphy is a motivational speaker, paralyzed athlete, and writer. His journey began in April 2007 when he fell off a roof in college, shattered his spine, and was paralyzed.  Michael is now a 12-time marathoner with Top 5 finishes in New York and Boston. He was also featured on NBC after completing two Tough Mudder competitions in 2012 and 2013 with the help of his teammates and an off-road handcycle.

This week we have the 2019 Ironman European Championship Frankfurt – 1st and Ironman 70.3 Boulder – 1st.  She finished in 6th at Challenge Daytona a couple of months ago and 5th at Challenge Miami last month.  Pro triathlete Skye Moench has made an amazing comeback from her bike crash the kept her from racing at Kona back in 2019.  She's already qualified for Kona and we can't wait to see how the rest of her season goes in 2021.

Interview with Skye Moench

Despite having a limited background in endurance sports—Skye ran track and cross-country while in high school, but only biked and swam recreationally—she’s made a name for herself in just her third full year as a pro. In 2019, Moench, who lives in Salt Lake City with her husband Matt, established herself as a formidable competitor with four Ironman 70.3 podiums, plus a surprise win at the Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt, Germany.

As we said earlier she's qualified for Kona and she's come out of 2020 with a strong performance at Challenge Daytona and same at Challenge Miami.  We can't wait to chat with her about her big comeback and her plan for the rest of the 2021 season.

Utah, North Dakota latest to adopt safety stop law for cyclists

Utah and North Dakota became the latest states to adopt the controversial Idaho Stop law, allowing cyclists to treat a stop sign as a yield sign. Utah and North Dakota join Idaho, Washington, Delaware, Arkansas, and Oregon. In addition, a California coalition is backing another legislative attempt this year to adopt the Idaho Stop, also known as the safety stop law. In addition, the Oklahoma House of Representatives recently passed the legislation.

"Intersections are one of the most dangerous places for a cyclist to be," said Crys Lee, Bike Utah executive director. "This law should increase bicycle safety at stop-signed intersections as it has in places with similar laws like Delaware, where they saw a 23% decrease after enacting their stop as yield law in 2017."

Lee said Bike Utah will work with partners to collect data to prove why safety stop laws are effective in making intersections safer for cyclists. Critics of the safety stop say it's better to have an unambiguous set of laws that apply to all road users and having cyclists following separate rules makes their actions less predictable to motorists.

"As other states follow suit, they need to gather data and gather as many people and supporters as possible, and get yourself a champion like Rep. Spackman Moss," said Lee, who said Utah's passing of the law was a collaborative effort among many.

North Dakota Active Transportation Alliance Executive Director Justin Kristan thanked the state’s department of transportation in a blog post for its “forward-thinking efforts to make roadway design and roadway laws more equitable for bicyclists.”

It seems one of the most common conversations when cyclists gather for chilly spring rides revolve around upcoming summer events and race plans. PROFESSIONAL TRIATHLETES ORGANISATION COMMISSIONS FILMNOVA TO PRODUCE GLOBAL BROADCAST OF THE COLLINS CUP 2021

LONDON, ENGLAND: The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) today announced that it has commissioned outside broadcast specialists, FilmNova, to deliver live coverage of the PTO’s flagship event – The Collins Cup on 28th August at the extraordinary x-bionic® sphere in Šamorín, near Bratislava, Slovakia. They will work alongside multi award winning director, Martin Turner, who will head the broadcast team as Executive Producer.

 

The Collins Cup is a new race format modelled after the Ryder Cup, which will see teams of International, European and USA athletes pitted against one another and aims to create and leverage the excitement, rivalry, drama and personalities of the sport of triathlon to attract a wider fan base.

 

The 2021 Barkley Marathons Had No Finishers

This year’s Barkley Marathons looked slightly different than previous editions. There were few international competitors due to pandemic-related travel restrictions, and because of this, a smaller field of runners (usually 40 runners line up), almost entirely Americans, took on the beast. Additionally, runners were required to get COVID-19 tests ahead of arrival, among other safety protocols.

 

A strong contingent of Barkley veterans lined up at the start, including Big’s Backyard champion Maggie Guterl, two-time Barkley Fall Classic winner Liz Canty, the only three-time Barkley finisher Jared Campbell, and multi-time Barkley attempter Jamil Coury. There was also a lot of excitement around Barkley virgins (first-timers) Courtney Dauwalter, Western States and Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc champion; and Luke Nelson, Tor des Geants finisher. Guterl, Canty, and Dauwalter were attempting to become the first woman to finish the Barkley.

 

The race started midweek, in order to deter spectators. Founder Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell blew the conch at 2:03 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 18, and runners set off on the first loop an hour later, when Cantrell lit his cigarette. Runners dealt with rainy and foggy conditions throughout the entire event.

 

 

‘It’s impossible to say’: Chris Froome unsure of when he’ll be ready to fight for GC in races again

Chris Froome has admitted that he doesn’t know when he will be able to compete for victory again.

 

The Briton is continuing his comeback from serious injuries at this week’s Volta a Catalunya, but despite headlining Israel Start-up Nation’s team, he was dropped on the opening stage and finished 90th on stage two’s time trial, 2-05 down on former Ineos Grenadiers team-mate Rohan Dennis.

 

The upbeat and confident Froome has made no secret in declaring his intention to win a record-equalling fifth Tour de France, but asked by Cycling Weekly if that was still a realistic goal he could fulfil this season, he said: “I can’t really put any time on it. I am just taking it one week at a time at the moment.

 

“It’s just about following the process and I am not putting a timeline on it. Naturally, I would love to be ready for the Tour de France but I have to keep following the process and do what I can.”

How Triathlon was Introduced to the World

The History and Background of Triathlons

A “triathlon” is defined as a three-part sports discipline comprising swimming, cycling, and running. The three sports are contested as a continuous event without a rest. The triathlon can be an individual or team event over varying distances.

 

Triathlon history dates back to the early 1970s and originated with the San Diego Track Club. The triathlon was designed to be an alternative to hard track training. The first triathlon event was held on September 25, 1974. Don Shanahan and Jack Johnstone are pioneers in the history of the triathlon. The San Diego Track Club sponsored the event. The triathlon then comprised a 10 km run, 8 km cycle, and 500 m swim. In 1989, the sport was awarded Olympic status and featured for the first time at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity. In fact, no other sport achieved Olympic status in such a short time. Over the next decade, the triathlon grew by leaps and bounds and soon gained recognition worldwide.

Interview with Megan Hottman

Megan Hottman earned her B.A. in Corporate Communications, magna cum laude, and her Juris Doctorate, both from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.  After law school, she accepted two consecutive judicial clerkships; one in Jackson County Circuit Court in Kansas City, Missouri and one in Jefferson County District Court in Golden, Colorado.

Hottman has represented over 120 cyclists in their individual cases, as well as provided counsel to other plaintiff's lawyers, to cycling groups, bike shops, and organizations.  She has authored countless articles and also co-authored a cycling-law resource book, Bicycle Accidents, Crashes & Collisions.

In addition to representing her own clients, she has been endorsed as a cycling expert by other lawyers.  She is known by Colorado cyclists as well as her fellow attorneys as THE go-to lawyer for anything cycling-related.  She handles cases in all 50 states, and is licensed in Missouri, Colorado, Arizona and Nebraska.  She provides frequent legal education seminars on biking laws, trends she sees in her cases and those nationwide, and education to both novice and veteran riders alike.  She also provides educational and training opportunities to law enforcement officers. 

In March 2015, Hottman and her practice were featured in an article titled "Broken Spokes" in Outside Magazine.  A few months later, she was also featured on HBO Real Sports, in a "Bike Wars" episode.

Boston Marathon icon Dick Hoyt has died at age 80

Boston Marathon icon Dick Hoyt died Wednesday morning at age 80, according to his son, Russ Hoyt. He passed peacefully in his sleep due to heart failure, his son said.

Dick Hoyt and his son, Rick, became Boston Marathon legends after their first run in 1980, during which the dad pushed Rick in a custom racing chair, according to the Boston Athletic Association.

The two completed a total of 32 Boston Marathons together, including a final finish in 2014, the association added.

"Dick personified what it meant to a be a Boston Marathoner, showing determination, passion, and love every Patriots' Day for more than three decades," the association said in a statement.

Ironman Texas Cancelled -

We have learned from both Harris County and Harris County Toll Road Authority that due to the Harris County COVID-19 Threat Level System currently at Level 1: Stay Home, and the resulting impact this has on the bike course, we regret to inform you that the IRONMAN Texas triathlon cannot take place on April 24, 2021.

Despite the change for IRONMAN Texas, as of today, the IRONMAN 70.3 Texas triathlon taking place in Galveston on April 11 and the IRONMAN 70.3 Lubbock taking place on June 27, remain as scheduled and preparations are ongoing.

Additionally, IRONMAN officials are working on an additional race location in Texas to host a full-distance IRONMAN event in 2021. More information on this is expected to be finalized and shared in the near future.

 

What's New in the 303:

Many Coloradans Race Challenge Miami, Leiferman, Von Berg Earn Podium Spot, Matt Miller Happy to be Racing Again!

As storm Xylia pummeled the Front Range of Colorado, many Coloradans raced the Challenge Miami Triathlon over the weekend. Ten Colorado based pro’s and a large contingent of athletes from Boulder’s BASE team raced the three day event. On the pro podium hoisting some champagne from Boulder were Chris Leiferman (4) and Rudy Von Berg (5). Germany’s Jan Frodeno won the men’s race over Lionel Sanders (2) and Ben Kanute (3). For the women, in a bit of a surprise, British triathlete Jodie Stimpson edged out favored Lucy Charles-Barclay of Britain by almost a minute and a half. Rounding out the women’s podium were Jackie Hering, Sara Perez Sala and Skye Moench. Boulder’s Lisa Bechares and Lesley Smith (A BASE sponsored athlete) finished 11th and 12th respectively. Other Colorado pros finishing included Tyler Butterfield (7), Tim O’Donnell (11), Matt Hanson (13), Ben Hoffman (16) and Robbie Deckard (19).

His journey began in April 2007 when he fell off a roof in college, shattered his spine, and was paralyzed.  Michael is now a 12-time marathoner with Top 5 finishes in New York and Boston. He was also featured on NBC after completing two Tough Mudder competitions in 2012 and 2013 with the help of his teammates and an off-road handcycle.

Interview with Ryan Bolton

Ryan Bolton (born March 26, 1973 in Rapid City, South Dakota) is an athlete from the United States. He competed in cross country, swimming and track for Campbell County High School in Gillette, Wyoming. He ran cross country and track for the University of Wyoming. He now competes in triathlon.

Bolton competed at the first Olympic triathlon at the 2000 Summer Olympics.[3] He took twenty-fifth place with a total time of 1:50:52.95. Bolton won the 2002 Ironman Triathlon at Lake Placid. Bolton was coached by Joe Friel.

Bolton now coaches a group of elite runners in Santa Fe, NM with the Harambee Track Club.

Challenge Miami and PTO Rankings

Many of our PTO Professionals will be racing at CHALLENGEMIAMI® on Friday which is an important race as they will not only be racing for their result on the day but, crucially, for much sought after PTO World Rankings Points which will enable them to qualify for the Collins Cup later this year. With the top four ranked male and female athletes being automatically selected for Team Europe, Team International and Team USA, those currently in those qualification spots will be keen to solidify their position. Equally, those not already qualified will be eager to move up in the PTO World Rankings to be eligible for automatic qualification or to impress their Team Captains enough to be chosen as a Captain’s Pick.

As with Challenge Daytona in December, this race will also take place on a NASCAR track, the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The women’s pro race is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET with the men’s following at 3:15 p.m. ET, and much of the racing action will be centered around the 650-acre speedway venue, which has two lakes, a 1.5-mile oval track, and a 2.2-mile road around it. The pros will be racing a unique distance: a one-mile swim, a 39-mile bike, and a 10.5-mile run. Similarly to Challenge Daytona, this race course will suit those athletes who can hold fast, flat power on the bike as they race a total of 17 laps on the track. The run course involves seven laps.

For those wanting to catch all the pro racing action live, you can tune into Challenge Miami’s Facebook page. It will cost $2.99 to watch the pro race. A highlights show of the pro race will also be broadcast on NBCSN on March 18 at 2 p.m. ET, March 21 at noon ET, and March 22 at 2:30 p.m. ET. The age-group races—which take place on Saturday and Sunday—will also be livestreamed on Facebook (for no cost).

What's New in the 303:

Open Letter From Without Limits on Upcoming Season and New Waitlist Option

As the days start to grow longer, that cabin fever has many of you wondering; what will triathlon season look like? Things are starting to move in the right direction for Colorado and the current COVID-Dial 2.0. Just this past week, Jefferson and Broomfield Counties recently moved to Level Blue, and the state enters Vaccine Phase 1B.3 for ages 60+ this Friday. Boulder County (Colorado Tri on June 5th) and Larimer County (XTERRA Lory on June 12th) “should” still safely enter Level Green (500 event limit) by the end of May.

We use “should” in quotes, as our goal continues to stay on the side of caution, giving each event the best possible chance to move forward. That being said, we’re placing a 250-athlete cap (Level Blue) on ALL June events. Our new registration provider (TriReg) has a waitlist feature. How does it work? Once we hit the 250 level you’ll be able to register for the waitlist, and it will store your payment info temporarily without charging you. Assuming we hit Level Green, then you’ll be automatically rolled into the event without any additional sign-up needed, receiving an immediate update e-mail.

Our goal is to notify all wait list athletes a minimum of 3 weeks prior to race day. Please note, that current 250 capacity level is combined for all distances. Unlike some running events that have been able to stage multiple waves throughout the day, we face unique obstacles such as limited water access, that prevent this option.

303 Book of the Month

We have an oldie but a goodie to recommend, especially as crews begin their climbs up Everest. Bear Grylls wrote about his climb in 2000. This book is a bit different, it shares a lot of interesting detail about his experience, as in normal stuff, like trying to go to the bathroom at 23,000 feet in the dark, stuff you have maybe always wondered about, how scared he was at 23 to try this climb.

USA TRIATHLON ANNOUNCES 2021 TOYOTA U.S. PARATRIATHLON NATIONAL TEAM ROSTER

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon today announced the 16 members of the 2021 Toyota U.S. Paratriathlon National Team, the group of athletes who will represent the U.S. at the highest levels of elite paratriathlon competition during the 2021 season.

The talented group, which includes four Paralympic triathlon medalists and six world champions, will compete at World Triathlon Para Cup events, World Triathlon Para Series events and the World Triathlon Para Championships throughout 2021. Select athletes will also represent Team USA at the postponed Paralympic Games Tokyo 2021, which will take place this summer from Aug. 24-Sept. 5.

“USA Triathlon is proud to honor the 16 paratriathletes who will represent us on the world stage this season,” said Amanda Duke Boulet, USA Triathlon Paralympic Program Director. “The 2021 roster includes both veterans of the sport and relative newcomers, but all have the potential to win medals against fierce international competition. Our athletes have adaptability and resilience at their core, and they are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to qualify and compete at the Tokyo Paralympic Games this summer.”

Seely led a U.S. podium sweep in Rio with silver medalist Hailey Danz (Colorado Springs, Colo., PTS2) and bronze medalist Melissa Stockwell (Colorado Springs, Colo., PTS2), a U.S. Army veteran. The trio are currently training as part of the Toyota U.S. Paratriathlon Resident Team Program based at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in the lead-up to Tokyo.

303 visited Alchemy’s office and manufacturing facility along the Cherry Creek bike path to check out the new Arktos. We hadn’t been here before and took a tour and met the staff. They make their own carbon and titanium frames here–very high quality ones at that. Not many people make carbon frames in the United States. Interview with Rocky Harris

After opening remarks from Mike Reilly, Rocky Harris gave the keynote address at this year's Endurance Exchange five weeks ago.  In that address he spoke to the changes in the endurance industry and the drivers that shaped decline in participation in triathlon over the past decade.  Those with isolationist views, worked in different directions, they helped fragment the sport and outsiders saw this as a weakness. 

 

Rocky also spoke about growing the sport and the need for the sport to represent the general population in terms of diversity, inclusion and the opportunity to attract athletes like former gym converts.  Rocky spoke about the need to embrace technology and e-gaming and what he thinks about other race formats like Otillo,

    • Objective - pace, hr, power, TSS, CTL, ATL, TSB, variability
    • How to interpret objective data and the athlete's subjective information
    • Objective you can see it
    • Subjective it’s the feeling, the mood
    • Understanding the subjective is very important and good athletes are tapped into how they feel and know how to communicate subjective data to the coach
    • How do you unravel the lie from athletes?  Using other objective.  Or knowing your athlete.  If you know the person has an ego.  You need to know them personally. 
    • How about when you want to train the athlete - do you ever ask the athlete to go off data and just go by feel?
    • People get stuck on a plan without understanding how to adjust the plan if needed based on how they feel
    • Most triathletes wants to learn this stuff.  They want to no Normalized Power v Average Power.

Update: Collegiate Club Nationals Postponed and Draft-Legal World Qualifier Rescheduled

February 19: USA Triathlon has been in regular contact with local authorities in the City of Tempe, including the Department of Health, and is closely monitoring recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding mass gatherings and events. In addition, we have been tracking developments at the collegiate level over the last several months, including continued online learning and student-athlete travel restrictions at many colleges and universities. Having taken these circumstances into consideration, and after consulting with members of the USA Triathlon Collegiate Club Committee, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2021 Collegiate Club National Championships.

 

USA Triathlon is working diligently to find an alternate date in the fall of 2021 to host Collegiate Club Nationals in a safe and fair way for all athletes, including those with graduation dates in 2020 or 2021 who would otherwise miss the opportunity to represent their school as a senior. We will communicate any updates to the Collegiate Club Committee and all collegiate club team leaders as appropriate.

 

 

A 3D-printed custom cycling shoe, the LoreOne, will launch in April

Olympian and longtime bike fitter Colby Pearce has partnered with a new company Lore for a 3D-printed custom road cycling shoe. The LoreOne, a hardshell, carbon cycling shoe, will launch in April.

 

Lore will 3D print the shoes using scans of a rider’s feet. The resulting carbon monocoque design will be more efficient than other shoes, while still allowing a rider’s feet to move “freely and powerfully” inside the hardshell structure, Lore claims.

 

How much does it cost? How much does it weigh? And how comfortable could a hardshell carbon shoe actually be? For now, Lore is big on claims and short on details, but those are promised for its April launch.

 

The Lore team includes people who have worked in design and engineering at brands like Apple, Tesla, Puma, DPS, Nike and Black Diamond.

 

“We are excited to share Lore to the world,” Lore CEO Stephan Drake said in a release. “We have an amazing team that is pushing the bleeding edge of technology and design. The LoreOne is not only the most exciting cycling shoe ever made, but is revolutionary across all footwear categories. Pearce, a multi-time national champion and record holder, has long obsessed over fit, whether for record-setting hour record rides or for his bike-fitting clients.

Megan Hottman’s First Time In Tucson Riding and Exploring

While I’ve spent a lot of time in Arizona in my life, I’ve never made it to Tucson. When I began mapping out my vanlist dreamlist of places I wanted to do, Tucson was on the list. For very specific reasons: I wanted to ride the “loop,” this amazing network of protected bike lanes all over town, totaling close to 130 miles (basically, a bike advocate’s dream come true, short of visiting Copenhagen!); and, I’ve wanted to ride Mt Lemmon, a nice long sustained climb that I’ve heard about for years.

 

So I set up my work week to allow for a midweek visit. Because vanlife and living a life by design, on purpose, to me means maximizing the days and times during the week as opposed to only seeking fun and adventure on weekends — you know, when the rest of humanity is out doing the same. Friends, weekday exploration is where it’s at. So- looking ahead, I crushed work and adulting and then punched out for a Midweek adventure..

Making swimming pools safer by reducing chlorine disinfection byproducts

Swimming in indoor or outdoor pools is a healthy form of exercise and recreation for many people. However, studies have linked compounds that arise from chlorine disinfection of the pools to respiratory problems, including asthma, in avid swimmers. Now, researchers reporting in ACS' Environmental Science & Technology have found that using a complementary form of disinfection, known as copper-silver ionization (CSI), can decrease disinfection byproducts and cell toxicity of chlorinated swimming pool water.

Disinfecting swimming pool water is necessary to inactivate harmful pathogens. Although an effective disinfectant, chlorine can react with organic matter and compounds introduced by swimmers, such as those in sweat, urine, sunscreens and cosmetics, to produce disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Epidemiological studies have linked DBPs to health problems, including respiratory issues, bladder cancer, and pregnancy and birth complications. One way to reduce the amount of added chlorine is through the use of complementary disinfection strategies, such as CSI, which involves generating antimicrobial copper and silver ions by electrolysis. Susan Richardson and colleagues wondered whether using CSI along with reduced chlorine levels could disinfect pool water while also reducing DBP formation and toxicity.

To find out, the researchers collected water samples from two pools treated with CSI and chlorine -- one outdoor and one indoor. They detected 71 DBPs, some of which were quantified for the first time in pools. In experiments with mammalian cells in the lab, the team found that the indoor pool samples were more toxic to cells than the outdoor samples, likely because outdoor DBPs can volatilize in the open air or degrade with sunlight over time. In indoor pool water, the lowest levels of DBP formation and toxicity were observed when the lowest amount of chlorine was used in combination with CSI. To control for factors such as number of swimmers, temperature and pH, the researchers also conducted experiments in simulated pools with a solution added that mimics human body fluids, and they observed similar results. These data suggest that using CSI with lower amounts of chlorine could be a way to make swimming safer, the researchers say.

Letter from Editor, Bill Plock, Why I Wanted to Join BRAC

Some people may wonder why I wanted to join the BRAC board, now known as Coloradocycling.org. After all I am not known as a bike racer or a race promoter or race director. Those have been the typical titles of most board members. I am more known, athletically at least, as a triathlete—hopefully professionally more known as the owner/publisher of 303Endurance—which owns 303Cycling.com and 303Triathlon.com and the 303Endurance Podcast.

So I am not your typical board member. But that’s precisely why I wanted to join the team. The current board has a lot of talent—on and off the bike. They care about cycling first and foremost. They care about racing too. They, like me want to do everything possible to foster the best cycling culture in the country.

I met BRAC President Andy Johnson about a year ago and we shared a beer on my porch and brainstormed ideas on how we could create an environment of more inclusion and getting more people to explore racing or doing group bike events and rides. We talked about ways BRAC could provide more value to cycling. I then interviewed Executive Director Shawn Ferrel and learned more about him and it was clear these guys love bikes and the lifestyle that goes with them, just like I do.

UCI to ban forearms time-trial position on road bikes

First the super tuck, and now the popular breakaway position get the ax from the UCI, starting April 1.

In a memorandum issued on February 8, the UCI indicated it will ban riders from racing with their forearms on their handlebars, in a time-trial like position, when on a road bike.

Last week, the UCI indicated it would begin to enforce the rule prohibiting riders from the ‘super tuck’ descending position, where a rider sits on the top tube and curls into a tight position on a downhill. The news was greeted with mixed feelings, and VeloNews debated the merits of the rule and the UCI’s renewed interest in enforcing it.

Both rules will start being enforced — and this is apparently not a joke — on April 1.

 

Diversity in US cycling: How inclusion is being 'built from the ground up'

During Black History Month, we check in with the national federation about its new grant programme.

In 2020, the Black Lives Matter movement and the mass protests across the country highlighted the vast racial inequalities in the United States. It also forced the country's cycling federation to look closer at the lack of diversity in the sport and make plans to make cycling more inclusive.

"We are committed to finding ways to make cycling look more like the population of the United States but we're a long way from that," CEO Rob De Martini said at the time.

Jen Barbour of Team Evergreen and Triple Bypass Shares What She Loves About it and What's New

If you have ever met Jen Barbour, the Executive Director of Team Evergreen, who puts on the annual Triple Bypass, you have felt her passion for cycling and equal compassion for people. In an organization who exists to raise money for local charities while riding bikes, she is the perfect fit.

That passion punches a big energy punch too, and like the way she rides a bike, her efforts are relentless and enduring. She has been swamped this year with the recent acquisitions of the Bailey Hundo, and Beti Bike Bash. Then add in the new Floyd Hill Sessions Series (Mtb weekly timed enduro series) and Co2ut Gravel Ride along with all the COVID challenges and working on the Triple Bypass and Bob Cook Mt. Evans Hill Climb, Jen is, well, buried. We managed to sneak a few minutes of her time and ask a few questions about the Triple Bypass and Team Evergreen.

 

Vulnerable Wheat Ridge/CU Grad Deb Conley Overcoming Major Adversity On Way to the Hall of Fame

Deb Conley started running for the first time the summer before attending the University of Colorado at Boulder. She ran just to run with a new boyfriend. Like three miles. A couple of months later she walked on to CU’s cross country team and has been running ever since.

And just recently, she was inducted into the Colorado Running Hall of Fame. Wow. She never played sports growing up, never ran, never did anything but work and go to school.

In this video interview, Deb expresses a surprised happiness after being selected for the Colorado Running Hall of Fame. But she also shares something vulnerable; how running in college was the first time she ever experienced feeling truly happy.  What's not really discussed, is the rocky and almost impossible path she took to get here.

Interview with Chaz Davis

Charles “Chaz” Davis is a visually impaired runner from Grafton, Massachusetts. His debut as a marathon competitor occurred December 3, 2016 at the California International Marathon (CIM). With a finish time of 2:31:48, Davis set a new American record for the T12/B2 visual impairment category. Chaz's CIM finish time was 29 seconds faster than the 2:32:17 finish of Paralympian Gold Medalist El Amin Chentouf at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.

The 2016 Rio games marked another first for Davis. As a member of Team USA's track and field contingency, he finished 8th in the 5000m and 10th in the 1500m. CIM prides itself as a starting block for would be marathon runners. The CIM website notes being a qualifier event for the oldest continuously running Boston Marathon and US Olympic Trials Marathon. In yet another personal best, Davis ran the 122nd Boston Marathon on Monday April 16, 2018. Although he broke no records, Boston.com lists Chaz 5th among its 15 notable 2018 Boston Marathon finishers. His official end time was 2:56:22.

Davis began his career as a teen racing for Grafton High School in MA. Determined to excel, he entered the University of Hartford and accepted a position on its cross country team. Shortly after completing his inaugural running season, Davis was diagnosed with Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON). This rare disease destroys the optic nerve in the eye typically resulting in sudden vision loss which was the case for Chaz. Despite his legally blind classification, Chaz continues to make lemonade with his lemons.

Davis currently works at the Massachusetts Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired, a division of MAB Community services in the Greater Boston area. As the coordinator of Team With A Vision's para-athletics division and adaptive programs, Davis is responsible for leading the team of athletes. Having a master's degree in social work Davis will also work in the adjustment to vision loss counseling department.

What We Learned from Tracking Cycling Deaths for a Year

In December, the driver of a box truck plowed into a group of cyclists riding along U.S. Highway 95 south of Las Vegas. Five people died in the crash, and it was later discovered that the driver had methamphetamine in his system. At Outside, we were horrified by the tragedy, which was covered in local and national news, but we also knew it was part of a troubling trend: record numbers of cyclists (and thousands of pedestrians) on our nation’s roads are being killed by drivers often without any media attention beyond a brief local news story. In 2018, 857 cyclists died in crashes with drivers, the deadliest year for people on bikes since 1990. In 2019, while the total number of deaths dipped slightly, to 846, cities like New York recorded their highest number of cyclist fatalities ever.

Last January, in response to those disturbing numbers, we launched the #2020CyclingDeaths project, which aimed to track every person on a bike killed by a driver in the U.S. over the course of the year. In the end, we recorded 697 cyclist deaths. Since we were only able to count deaths reported by local media, the actual total is likely significantly higher. The five victims of the Nevada crash were numbers 662 through 666 in our database.

In late December, we partnered with the nonprofit BikeMaps.org, founded by Trisalyn Nelson, a professor in geographic information science at the University of California at Santa Barbara. BikeMaps.org has been collecting crowdsourced information about cyclist crashes, near misses, traffic hazards (like potholes and road construction), and bike thefts in the U.S. and Canada since 2014. Its team helped us analyze the data we collected and synthesize the information. While the overall number of cyclists deaths in 2020 appears to be lower than the past couple of years, likely because of the spring lockdowns in response to the pandemic, there is no sign that our streets are getting safer. Here’s what we found.

 

Zwift bans two more virtual racers for ‘data manipulation’

The online training and racing platform has handed out more sanctions to riders it believes edited their power files

Zwift has banned two more riders from virtual racing for alleged data manipulation.

 

The online training and racing platform has released details of two more sanctions it has handed to riders accused of manipulating their power data after competing in online races. Both riders, Antonina Reznikov and Selma Trommer, have been banned from competing in official Zwift e-sports events for six months, after the Zwift Performance Verification Board found anomalies in the numbers. Reznikov, from Israel, has been sanctioned after competing in the Zwift Racing League (Season 2) Women’s Race 1 event, where she finished in fourth place. Announcing its decision, the Zwift performance board said following the race Zwift’s automated systems found that dual-recorded data from the rider’s power meter may have been edited, leading to further investigation.

Tips for Creating a Resistance Band Workout for Cyclists

As a cyclist, are you looking to get better results when you ride? Maybe you’re aiming to get a competitive edge, increase your uphill power, or improve your performance on sprints. 

Whatever your goals are, resistance training with bands will be the key to unlocking next-level performance.

Why Resistance Band Training is Good for Cyclists

To become a more efficient cyclist, even the most-beginner level riders need to incorporate some form of strength training into their weekly training routines. Factoring in just one to three workouts a week can produce significant results that will directly feed your performance on the bike. 

Unless you’re a professional cyclist, the chances are you don’t have much time in your daily life to devote to extensive cross-training routines. Embarking on a progressive weight training program at the gym is all well and good for those who can devote their lives to cycling, but time is of the essence when it comes to balancing your job, family, and hobbies. 

This is why you need to start doing regular resistance band training. No matter where you are or how little time you have, resistance bands can give you an effective workout without the hassle of having to travel to the gym or set up awkward equipment. 

For a dynamic sport like cycling, resistance bands have the edge over conventional weights and dumbbells.

When performing a banded exercise, the entire range of motion is carried out under tension, meaning that you activate and strengthen muscles on both the movement’s eccentric and concentric phases. 

Eccentric training can lead to more robust and resilient muscles, enhanced joint control and proprioception, and even reduce the post-workout fatigue you may experience.

2021 Boston Marathon Is Scheduled For October 11; All Six World Marathon Majors to Be Contested in 6-Week Span

The B.A.A. announced Tuesday that the 2021 Boston Marathon will take place on Monday, October 11. The race had already been postponed from its traditional spot on the calendar in April and until today remained the only World Marathon Major yet to announce a date for its 2021 edition. The announcement comes with one significant caveat — it will only take place if Massachusetts’ reopening plan allows for road races by the fall.

“We announce the 2021 Boston Marathon date with a cautious optimism, understanding full well that we will continue to be guided by science and our continued collaborative work with local, city, state, and public health officials,” B.A.A president and CEO Tom Grilk said in a press release.

Boston is the only WMM to be held on a weekday, traditionally taking place on Patriots’ Day — the third Monday in April and a state holiday in Massachusetts. This year’s race will retain the Monday date and will coincide with a national holiday, Columbus Day. With the Chicago Marathon scheduled for October 10, this also means two of the world’s largest marathons will be contested on consecutive days.

The most condensed World Major Marathons schedule in history is now set — all six WMM events are slated to be held within a six-week span in the fall. Here’s how it will look (with the Olympics included as well):

August 7 – Women’s Olympic Marathon

August 8 – Men’s Olympic Marathon

September 26: Berlin Marathon

October 3: London Marathon

October 10: Chicago Marathon

October 11: Boston Marathon

October 17: Tokyo Marathon

November 7: New York City Marathon

Mountain Swim Series Announces Race Dates

The organizers of Mountain Swim Series are really excited for a 2021 race season! “The State of Colorado has provided guidance for outdoor events this summer, and we expect to host all four of our open water swims this summer!”​

 

The 2021 Mountain Swim Series dates are on the books, check them out below, and registration opens on the first week of February. You will get an email letting you know that registration is open! But first, a couple of quick notes:

 

There is NO have race-day registration this year, and we will have to close registration 1-week in advance of all races. Please sign up early if you want to swim!!

 

The dates for the swim series are as follows:

Solstice Sunset Swim – Longmont, End of June, not yet confirmed:

This event includes a 1.2 mi, 2.4 mi, and the NEW 500 YD swims!

Carter Lake – Saturday July 17th, 2021:

An out and back 3-mile swim, similar to 2020, in beautiful Northern Colorado.

Chatfield Classic – Sunday August 15th, 2021:

Limited to 200 participants, sign up in while there is still space! 

This event includes a 500 yd, 1 mile and 2 mile swim!

The Castle 2.5K/5K/10K – In Bailey, Saturday August 28th, 2021:

This is the highest altitude organized marathon swim event in the country! We will have the camping option again on Friday night – which you’ll find through the swim registration site. Camping is $40 for a 4 person site and will decrease your morning day of drive!

New Triathlon, New Venue; The Lonetree Sprint South of Loveland, July 31st

Lake to Lake Events is adding a brand new triathlon in a brand new venue on July 31st. The very popular Lake to Lake Triathlon will be held as usual on June 26th, but event producer Peggy Shockley is adding a sprint triathlon utilizing Lone Tree Reservoir located just south of Loveland– – the Lonetree Sprint.

With a slightly longer bike than your traditional Sprint, this event caters perfectly to those who enjoy spending time in the saddle, especially through our beautiful Colorado Foothills.

Japan looking for a way out of Olympics because of COVID

Tokyo’s Olympics dream likely will have to wait.  The Japanese government has privately concluded that the Tokyo Olympics — originally slated for last summer — will have to be cancelled because of COVID-19, according to a report from The Times of London.  The report states Japan will now switch its focus to securing he Olympics for the next available year, 2032.  Japan has spent $25 billion on preparations for the competition, though polls have shown 80 percent of Japanese people are against it going on as planned, according to the report.  Despite public posturing from both the International Olympic Committee and the Japanese government saying the games can happen, a winter wave of coronavirus cases in Japan has made that goal far more difficult, according to The Times.


Ironman Indiana

This year, IRONMAN Indiana will reward those who choose not to wait. It will welcome those who live by the phrase “now’s the time” instead of “next time”. And most of all, it will give athletes the first and only opportunity to take on 140.6 miles in the longest standing host city of Muncie, Indiana. General Registration opens for IRONMAN Indiana and IRONMAN 70.3 Muncie on January 25th at 12pm ET/11am CT.  We look forward to seeing you in Muncie on October 2, 2021!

A Weight Lifted: Paratriathlete Hailey Danz Shares Her Coming Out Story

In November, 2020, I did one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever done. In this social media post, I came out as gay.  I think I’ve known I was gay since college, but I fought it for a long time. I already fell into one minority group having lost my leg to cancer, and I guess I didn’t want there to be one more thing to make me different. Even as I began to accept this piece of my identity, I was ambivalent toward the idea of coming out publicly. On the one hand, it felt like something I shouldn’t be obligated to do. While my sexuality is a part of me, it’s certainly not the most significant part. I didn’t want to make a big deal about being gay because in the grand scheme of who I am, it’s not a big deal.

(It’s my hope that one day people won’t feel like they have to “come out” as we know it, because acceptance of differences in sexuality is the norm. And for the record, I think we’re close to this being the case.)  But the reality is, we’re not there yet. And in our current world, if you’re a gay professional athlete who’s not publicly out, you’re hiding something.

And let me tell you, hiding a part of yourself is exhausting. The weight of that burden is not unlike the weight of a chronically high training load. When you carry it around long enough, fatigue becomes your baseline, and you stop noticing how much effort you’re using just to stay afloat.

 

Triny Willerton and IT COULD BE ME and The Story Behind the New Video

Triny was astounding and led to a movement she created called “It Could Be Me.” She crusades to do everything possible to help makes roads safer for cyclists and vulnerable road users. She played an instrumental role in pushing for legislation in 2019 that greatly increased the penalties for drivers who injure or kill vulnerable road users.

Whats impressive is her tenaciousness and energy for building a community of people who share her passion for making sure the roads are as safe as possible. She has over a 100 ambassadors spreading the cause across North America, Europe and Australia.

In her quest she discovered that part of the problem, or maybe challenge is that motorists don’t see cyclists as everyday people. They “see” them as annoyances, or a nuisance or as “those people in spandex”, almost like they aren’t human.

She decided to embark on a campaign to make sure cyclists are seen as humans and like anyone else. That they are parents, sons, daughters, co-workers, teachers, doctors, friends–just like the motorist–who needs to be respectful and mindful of them and treat them like any other human.

Triny asked people to send videos of themselves talking about who they are and why they love to ride or walk and how they are parents or whatever to remind everyone to be careful and mindful of their own safety. There are now a few thousand videos and even Governor Polis made one for the It Could Be Me Facebook page. She has gotten attention from people all over the world and continues to grow her platform.

She recently released a video to hone in on the mission, even starring Bicycle Colorado’s Executive Director Pete Piccolo!

Brian Wiens went into the backcountry in March, worrying if the pandemic would stop his streak and his goal of skiing 300 consecutive months in Colorado.  In the winter months, skiing at the resorts is a peace of cake.  Even at my most committed I may have strung together a couple seasons in a row of skiing November to April.  Sure some places like A-Basin are open until June and opens in October/November.  If you want to ski in July or August, your putting  your skis on your back and hiking a few hours to find a snow field above 12-13,000 feet.  Imagine the discipline and commitment (and hopefully some cool stories) to do 12 months in a row.  Now multiply that by 25.  Let's talk to Brian Wiens.

Cycling-Tour champion Pogacar and UAE Emirates mates first team to get COVID-19 vaccine

(Reuters) - Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar and his UAE Emirates team mates has been vaccinated against COVID-19 at a training camp in Abu Dhabi, the team said on Friday.

“The riders and staff of the Tour de France 2020 winning team UAE Team Emirates have taken the UAE Ministry of Health & Prevention approved COVID-19 vaccine developed by Sinopharm CNBG,” UAE Emirates said in a statement.

“A total of 27 riders, including the Tour de France 2020 winner Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar, plus 32 staff have now received the vaccine.”  They are the first professional cycling team to be vaccinated.

 

RUSSIAN YEKATERINA NEKRASOVA BREAK ICE SWIMMING WORLD RECORD

Just when you thought your morning practice jump-in was cold, Moscow swimmer Yekaterina Nekrasova went ice-swimming in her native Russia in order to claim a new world record.

Swimming on Lake Baikal, the world’s oldest and deepest lake, the finless Nekrasova swam under ice for 85 meters without surfacing. The previous record of this type stood at 70 meters set by South African Amber Fillary in Norway in 2019. The water temperature was said to be 0ºC or 32ºF and 40-year-old Nekrasova completed the feat sans wetsuit. (Moscow Times)

In the video below showing her new world record-setting ice swim, you can see where her support team cut through the estimated 25 cm-thick ice at regular intervals in order to assist Nekrasova should she need to abandon the effort.

But Nekrasova is apparently just getting started. State-run media reported her coach, Russian Winter Swimming Federation Head Andrei Bugai as saying, “Ekaterina plans to overcome 100 meters this year.”

Colorado Classic Plans a Return to Racing in 2022, Cancels 2021 Event

The Colorado Classic® presented by VF Corporation, America’s premier women’s only racing event, today announced its plans to return to racing in 2022 and not hold an event in 2021.

Following an overwhelming success in its debut as a women’s standalone event in 2019, racing worldwide came to a halt at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite their fierce commitment to creating an innovative and safe live racing model, organizers behind the event had to cancel the 2020 edition due to ongoing health concerns.

Now, with the 2021 race season looming, the pandemic situation remains uncertain at best. As such, organizers decided to not push forward with a 2021 event.

“In 2020, we spent months working tirelessly in conjunction with State, County and City organizations, health authorities, and the sports governing bodies to come up with a COVID mitigation plan that would ensure the health and safety for everyone. In the end, the most prudent decision was still to cancel the event. With the current situation being just as uncertain as it was last year, we don’t think it makes sense — financial or otherwise — to organize a 2021 event and risk another cancellation,” said Ken Gart, Chairman of RPM Events Group, the organizers of the Colorado Classic.

“This is not an easy decision to make. We know that this race holds an important place on both the domestic and international race calendars, and we remain committed to our goal of being the best women’s race in the world. But we hope that by delaying the event to 2022, the pandemic will have stabilized and we’ll be able to secure the necessary financial partners to do our event justice and host another game-changing, world-class event as we did in 2019.”

Interview with Tez Steinberg

We first spoke to Tez Steinberg in the summer of 2019.  He was preparing to do the solo row from California to Hawaii in the winter 2019-2020.  We stayed in touch to follow his story.  His schedule was delayed until the summer of 2020.  While most of us were isolating because of COVID, Tez was isolated by himself for 6 weeks 2,700 miles, documenting the plastic in the Pacific and collecting , and raising $76K for scholarships to United World College.

Marathon trials champion uses Olympic postponement to start family

Even if she couldn't immediately renew her nursing assistant license to help during the coronavirus pandemic, marathoner Aliphine Tuliamuk was determined to be productive through a one-year postponement until the Tokyo Olympics.

One way was to fulfill orders for her crocheted Allie Resiliency Beanies that took off following her victory at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in late February 2020.

The other way, she and her long-time boyfriend Tim Gannon decided, was to start a family. So this month, the 31-year-old Tuliamuk will give birth in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Then when she is physically ready, Tuliamuk will resume training with Northern Arizona Elite in Flagstaff to prepare for the Olympic marathon Aug. 7 in Sapporo, site of the 1972 Winter Olympics selected for distance events due to excessive summer heat in Tokyo.

For Tuliamuk and Gannon, engaged to be married, the birth of their daughter already named Zoe will be a joyous start to 2021 that her coach believes will carry over through the hard work necessary to prepare for the Olympics.  "Aliphine is as happy as she's ever been, and I just think there's something to be said for that," NAZ Elite coach Ben Rosario said. "Any couple who's really wanted to have a baby then have one, sure there's stress that comes with that and sleepless nights. But overall there's joy. And Aliphine has always competed best when she's happy.

Tuliamuk naturally was ecstatic after conquering the demanding trials course in Atlanta to win in 2:27.33 and become the first Olympic qualifier for NAZ Elite, going into its eighth year of operation. Her finish-line celebration with teammates Stephanie Bruce (sixth) and Kellyn Taylor (eighth) is one of the indelible 2020 Olympic sport memories before the Tokyo Games were postponed less than a month later.

In early December, Tuliamuk made her pregnancy public via social media. "Tim and I always knew that we wanted to have a family," she said. "The goal was post 2020 Olympics. As it turned out this year had other plans. By mid-April we were convinced there will be no more races this season. The darkness ahead was too much, we created our own light at the end of the tunnel.

"If anyone told me this would be the case 10 months ago, I would have called them crazy, but this is 2020. We planned this knowing that we would have six-plus months to get ready for Tokyo Olympics."

BRAC a Year in Review and What’s Ahead with President Andy Johnson

303Endurance caught up with Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado (BRAC) President, Andy Johnson to take a look back at 2020 and all the challenges and how they will help BRAC moving forward in 2021 and beyond to benefit not only bike racing community, but the cycling community in general. 

 

303: You have mentioned a new name for BRAC, are you ready to reveal that at this time and if so what is it?

 

Andy: Years ago when BRAC was under different leadership, the organization was keen on creating a URL that speaks to the larger vision of BRAC’s role in the Colorado cycling community.  So, if approved at Club Council in February, the Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado (which is a mouthful) and BRAC (which is always awkward to say and explain) will be known as ColoradoCycling.Org.  The name change affords us the ability to talk about cycling and cycling events in the broader context of our Colorado community.

When I say Castle Rock, Colorado…what comes to mind? Awesome backcountry adventure? A gritty and popular brew pub vibe from “the other side of the tracks”. Sara Hall runs second fastest American marathon time EVER at Marathon Project | NBC Sports

Sara Hall finished 2020 in style, setting her personal best in the marathon on her way to winning The Marathon Project in Chandler, AZ. Her record time of 2:20:32 is the 2nd fastest women’s marathon time in American history. It comes on the heels of her 2nd place finish at the London Marathon, where she also set a personal best just 11 weeks prior to shattering her own mark by 89 seconds at The Marathon Project.
